Keep Arches or Turn Garage?

last month
last modified: last month

Thoughts on modernizing this 1972 ranch? Roof must stay. Paint? Shutters? Keep those arches? Turn garage and move front door? New garage door? What about those corner Quoins--paint same color as house or different? FYI...That is a covered walkway to front door under the arches. Any help or advice is appreciated. TIA.

Which way would you turn the garage? I would not be better turned to the side with the arches.

I think if I were going to spend money I would get nicer windows?

Quoins the same color as the body of the house.

Turn the garage where? I don't think so. No shutters if you want to modernize. Paint the quions same color as house. It's not a modern house but agree the windows/paint color could be improved.

Leave the garage and remove those arches The quoins painted to match the house and I garee thos estark white windows do not work . The arches seem to form the walkway to the front door so if you still want that open feeling just rebuild those to be squared. Much more modern landscaping and please no shutters . What is behind that very tiny window? I would change the garage door to something a bit more modern. with some glass and since it is the foacal point of the front of the house make it something very nice in style .I would do white stucco and black windows maybe .

I like the arches. They add a bit of interest. I am completely mystified as to why so many people advise getting rid of arches. Lots of money for a result that is, at best, a bit blander. If you don't like the garage where it is, I'd chance the garage door. Get one with windows.

Since you have a quoins, I'd paint them a very slightly different color from the siding, not the large contrast you have now.

I would paint the garage door to match the house color. I like the arches. What jumped out at me is the stark white windows. If you're looking for a place to spend money, get some new windows that would blend in better with the earth tones.

I agree with Beverly. The house is really Mediterranean style. The roof and arches fit with that. The windows are too white against the current color, so painting it solves that problem.

I'd paint everything white, paint the front door some shade of Mediterranean blue & call it a day. Revisit the landscaping once the painting is done.

I think it's a lovely house. I really like the arches, they add visual interest. How lovely that would look with hanging baskets of flowers.

What needs improvement is the windows -- they seem too small, especially the one towards the corner, and the white doesn't go with the color of the house, nor does the white front door.

Many Houzzers hate anything with curved lines--arches, scallops, cabriole legs, turned posts. I agree that the arches are a nice touch and the whole house painted white as Bev showed would be a vast improvement. And yes, the garage doors could be replaced with something better. You could even get garage doors with arches. But in any case I think a dark brown wood would look great.

Personally from my perspective and the limited views we have show nothing that needs to chnage. Maybe if you really want to do something, paint the house a lighter color.

Paint the quions and trim the same color as the house and add a nice wood garage door and wood front door. There is nothing wrong with the arches or orientation of front door and walkway.
