Whale watching, Doors and Garages

last modified: 9 months ago

Our front door in Maine is currently painted white. I plan to paint it a different color (probably whatever i choose for the back porch screen door, probably FnB Parma-Gray-which-is-really-blue).

I am open to other suggestions on door color; the house is gray cedar shake with white trim.

I would also like a nice brass knocker, but our door cannot really accommodate a knocker. This is the only pic I have of it, from the inside obviously.

So in our first ATF rental, the house across the street had a door not that different from this layout, and they had a lovely brass whale silhouette mounted below the glass. I want one. I left them a note asking nicely where they got it, they texted me they would let me know but have not. I will try to take a pic of their door (wearing fake nose and glasses) if I can.

Meantime I have been looking for one. I was sure I could find it but no luck.

I like this rendering, but it does not come in brass

A different direction, these are painted wood carvings. He can do any fish. I could ask for a whale; this is a cod

Or I could ask the guy to do stripers, which is what DH catches when he surfcasts here,

This is close but I do not like this particular rendering and also it is way too big, at 38.5". I think 24" is about right.

Ideas?

Can you take #1 and paint it? It's by far my favorite.

I like the bass because it is a bit less frequently seen and because catching bass is in the family and a happier heritage.

Is a brass whale tail door knocker (hung just below the glass) too cliched?

If so, how about a brass oyster door knocker?

    If you reconsider a knocker....

Not sure what species are common where you are.

You could probably get the verdegris one plated in brass. Especially in Boston.

The verdigris guy just got back to me and he said he could use brass paint; which would last 15 minutes on an oceanfront home.

DH reminded me we have a screen door. I need to take a closer look at that! But it probably has a horizontal cross piece and that is where this would have to go.

Teeda, off to look at that one!

I was near our first ATF rental today and stole a pic of the whale that I covet. It's a really charming house but I could not get a good pic because they are putting on an addition and there were all these trade vehicles there. But here it is:

I had DH take a pic of our screen door for me. I think it will make the most sense to put the whale on the screen door cross piece, which is ~5.5" high and 32" wide. The screen door will be painted and get new screens, now that it is getting so much attention. It is currently white, like the solid door it covers.

It is funny to me that even though I think I used all of the appropriate search terms to find a reasonable facsimile, the results with the image were far superior.

I believe I can get all of these in the size I choose; probably about 12"? I think it will look so pretty!

    omg that view ❤️

I want to get a new screen door at our summer place this year, a wooden one with a decorative cutout.

Yes, that's just what we got but with out house number in the circle. Isn't your door a pretty coral color?

PS yes it's a gorgeous day but the pic (new phone) shows the screen ?! I had that happen to me too.

Okay, I ordered my whale. So excited!

He is gilded with gold leaf; the sculptor tells me the gold leafing holds up very well to the elements (ours will be covered by the verandah, but the salt air is killer for 90% of materials).

I'm very excited, but it will take a few months for delivery. Actually, pick up! The sculptor is in Camden Maine and I have heard they have a beautiful rooftop bar there. https://16bayview.com/the-view/ and the town/harbor are very picturesque I am told.

I will be back to ask about door color when I get pics going the "other way."

I just love whales! That one is great!

I have wanted a whale weathervane for years. I finally got one last year and placed it in the garden as DH wasn’t keen on mounting it on the roof.

We are planning (again) on adding a garage and the one we liked had a cupola. Dh removed it in the mockup and added a whale weathervane. Can i see yours?

Obv we are on a whale kick. I blame Mary Maguire, another kick I am on right now.

Saw this whale weathervane on FB marketplace and thought of you. Seller is located in Robbinsvile NJ. Says he doesnt ship but perhaps with some arm twisting?

Oh Ded, he is lovely. I have no idea what one should cost, and I might want to wait until we have a building or at least a permit, LOL. OTOH I have friends and relatives that live not that far from the seller, in Bucks County.

We prob won't start construction until Fall ... too much going on now, and then during summer we won't want a construction site.

A few years ago we snapped this photo of a garage we liked in Cohasset.

It is oddly tall and we are anti-cupola, so we created this version:

However, we will also want room for a golf cart so it will have to be wider overall. Logistically the extra width should be all to one side, but I think it will look better evenly distributed. I'd guess this is about 22' and we are going to do 30'.

I was thinking of painting the door Parma Gray, like the back door,

but I did a search on FnB for door colors and I like both of these, which are not dissimilar to my house.

My gold leaf whale will pop!

Question; the carver had a whale that is 4" x 18"; the cross piece on my screen door is 5.5x 32". I wanted a 12" one so he'd be about a third, but is the large one better? I am thinking yes...

Dont have an opinion on the whale width, but Camden is sweet. I hope you can pick up before the Memorial Day so you are there before it is too overrun. DH and I will often go there for a weekend in the offseason, we like to catch something at the Opera House and enjoy a meal. Be sure to wander into the library and sit under the skylight, its one of my favorite libraries in Maine.

Love the whale. I would def do a darker door to show him off!

We had a cupola on our garage and every once in a while, we’d think about adding a weathervane. In one of the bigger storms a year or so ago, our cupola blew off! So now we don’t even have a cupola (I mean, we do, but it’s sitting on the floor of the garage). DH wants to put it back up and add a weathervane, but we haven’t done anything about it yet.

Question - should a detached garage match the house? eg we have cedar shake, weathered to gray, and asphalt shingles. If we do cedar shake it will be new and wont' match anyway..... so do something else? Also Ive always liked metal roofs

Hmm, from Houzz: I would complement the house, not match it. Matching the house gives the garage equal architectural importance, which breaks an important rule of tradition. The house, being for humans, should always be of more prominence and higher quality finish than the garage,

I like matching. You can use a weathering product on the cedar to accelerate the graying. Also, love the dark door and I would go for the bigger whale.

You can use a weathering product on the cedar to accelerate the graying.

We have used that on cedar shake roofing, It works nicely to weather new shake, but it cannot make new shake look like your old shake... you cannot really get the colors to match

Larger whale is 4 W x 18 L. You were thinking 12 L. Is the width smaller proportionally on the.12" length or still 4?

    smaller proportionally

I think board and batten garage with cedar shake house is very traditional combo.

This looks like you inspo garage but with the bay doors on a differnt side.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked localeater

Yes. that is nice looking. Because of where the garage will go, the doors will be on the long end. The gable end, then, will have an ocean view. We don't plan to finish the upstairs space for zoning reasons, but it makes sense to orient things just in case.

Well. if the cedar shakes will never match, I vote for coordinating. Almost matching drives me crazy!

    exactly.
