How to make this house have more curb appeal!?

last modified: last month

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this house more attractive without a lot of major roof line changes? I like the idea of adding cedar shingles, wooden door, etc.

TYIA!

edit: thank you for the replies! we def plan to update the landscaping. Also click into the picture so it's not blurry!!

edit 2: thank you for the comments so far. just fyi this house is a potential buy and the house is not cleaned and the trash cans would always be out of sight. i am very interested in horizontal wooden siding with cedar shingles. i agree on the railing.its overwhelming.

I would leave the house as is and develop your landscape. Plants/trees/scrubs will totally change the look of the home.

I'm not keen on the alternating green and white stripe effect. I'd paint that part of the house all one color.

Paint the whole house one color, and replace the railing.

It's the left side that bothers me. A simple idea is to paint that part green to match, which would unite the house visually. And yes to landscaping and a different railing.

The roof and the driveway appear to be terribly dirty. Powerwash.

Is that an old tree stump at the garage door? Have that ground out by a tree trimming company.

I would put some windows in that left side garage wall it would just make ahuge difference in the front of the house then paint what is left that same gray/ green I see on the right at the bottom. Landscaping of course and a red door and aplace for garbage cans so they are not the first thing you see.

    @Mary-Claire Barnes,

Just to say, it's better to reply with new posts to your thread vs. editing your original opening post.

    1) People following a discussion expect new posts/replies to be at the end of the discussion as it progresses. It's intuitive to follow the discussion progress downward as it develops over time. That's standard procedure for how message boards are designed to work. It's not intuitive to look back at the opening post to find new information from the original poster.

    2) The board software sends notices to people who follow / subscribe to discussions of interest when new replies are posted. It doesn't do that when an existing post is edited AFAIK.

@dadoes understood lol. when I post on reddit we often edit a regular post to include some new info and that is pretty common so users will often go back up to read. its not as intuitive on here since theres not really a direct reply under each comment, but i appreciate your thorough explanation.

I think, the house itself looks fine. I agree with the others, about landscaping. I would also add some small flowering trees, out in the yard part. The driveway is very dirty and needs to be power washed.

I would open up the railing and add stairs that lead to the front door and a walkway to the the stairs. Here's a really rough sketch and then work on landscaping and unify the paint colors to make it look like one house instead of two that were pasted together.

On the right side of the house the stripe has the green fat, white skinnier. On the left side the fat stripe is white, skinny green. The garage would look nice more green. The trim boards white would really pop. I am never a fan of metal railing. I suppose something is needed with the elevation difference.

It looks like the area with the railing is meant for a wheelchair entry. If you do have a multi-stair entry to the house, you might also keep the existing entry. Accidents do happen.

How about adding windows to the garage side , cedar singles, cedar railing, and a sidewalk from the driveway up to the front door (with steps of course). maybe some cedar window boxes on the right side? And of course, new landscaping.
