How to decorate with furniture with old hardwood floor color?

last modified: 9 months ago

I am in a pickle. I would like to refresh this room a bit but most of the house has a red oak english walnut with thin traditional slats on the floor. How to decorate with todays trendy minimalist style but with keeping some of my pieces and drapery. Whenever I see this look, the floors are blonde or a brown gray. There are some things that were too pricey and recently done to discard. I dont want to get critiqued and laughed at from certain members on how wrong everything is... I just would like advice on how to improve on what I have. Love my Antique console table that was just re-painted. The curtain panels are staying, Im not knocking down the built-in bookshelves or painting over the fireplace stones. Im not restaining the floors. Should I get sofa loveseat combo? Change up the lights? Can you members be nice.? (i dont understand I can never upload any photos.. very unfriendly site here)

I will wait for the pictures posted here in comments DO NOT start another post . We will try hard to not be critical but you need to remember you asked for help so that is what you will get . Take what you like and ignore the rest is the best way to handle answers. You should be awre that if you ask for help but with a big list of what you will not do you will not get the best ideas .

Your floors are a classic color and can work with any style.

    Minimalist = less stuff

I would first empty the room and only leave the things you want/need to keep.

Then bring back in some items to make it comfortable and a reflection of your taste.

    More photos would help.

All these have a similar floor color to yours.

You seem to think you have something bad because it isn't what has been trending for the past 15 years? Trends have actually moved away, in the last 4 years, from the grayed out floors to warmer floors, so you might be ahead of the next trend!

Your flooring isn't a problem but with only updating seating and lightning, the overall look of the room won’t change. How do you see everything else achieving your desired look, as a room is a sum of its parts. I’d therefore suggest looking for a seating style that suits what you have, but adaptable if/when updating. (Maybe consider a couch/occasional chairs or a sectional, as a love seat is not very comfortable for two, but the room layout may dictate choice).

Oh geez, your floors are the best part of the room, from what I can see--only one photo.

The gray-washed-out look that's been popular for the past years is so overdone and boring. Get some real color in your room. Show the whole room if you can (Houzz has been awful with this lately), with a dimensioned floor plan, and some ideas of rooms you like, and you'll get a lot of help.

Maybe I'm using the wrong word. My rooms are large so minimalist may not be the correct terminology. I was referring to style. I thought I should keep it simple. I have curved legs, straight legs, traditional legs, modern legs. I do like using black but im afraid of it even though its like a safe invisible color.

I change up the pillow colors seasonally. It is usually with soft turquoises light blues and teals. Those are my winter pillows in terra cottas. I know I have to change up the rug so its more neutral. I like to decorate with monochromatic colors so its easy to change up often with accessories.

Floors are beautiful and very versatile they will fit in lots of styles. I would change the TV console to a simpler longer wood tone similar to your floor or like the top on your white console table. New coffee table and end tables not matching but coordinating and simpler wall art pieces.

In my opinion, you need to have a session or two with a color consultant. Your floors are beautiful, but your lavender-grey wall, pouf, and slipcovers do the room no favors. The rug also fights with the floors.

"Change up the rug so its more neutral." You can't get much more neutral than a gray and white rug. That's not the problem. The problem is that the rug is TOO neutral.

I love color and pattern, but I understand that you want a monochromatic look. The trick with successfully pulling off a monochromatic palette is to have a LOT of textures and organic materials. It shouldn't be a default choice "so its easy to change up often with accessories." Because it isn't--all neutrals do not always work together. In fact it's more difficult to blend neutrals because if you don't do it carefully they can clash.

Here's a link to a discussion I started a few months ago on decorating with neutrals. The home featured in the discussion is magnificent, as all who commented agreed!

I see what you mean by mono w.different textures. i love the cover photo to that.. but these houses dont look lived in. sisal chairs are not comfortable to sit on and ruin your polyester apparel. im on long island, in NY. Here we live in our home so i need comfort and functionality as well as style. i would love it if someone could just say, this is the type/style coffe table or console or color wood to put on this wall or that. i will go out and do my own picking out as close to that as possible in my budget and resources. thanks so much. when i get around to it, i shall attach the floor plan which to me is complicated if you have to use a calculator for the correct TV size and sitting distance etc...

I think you are not a real minmalist but trying to be . I love the floors but not the chairs which IMO look cheap with those sloppy covers. That little table is all alone with no purpose so no connection to the rest of the room.. What is that space beside the TV it looks a mess ?I need more pics of the whole room from furher back so I can see how all these things relate to the space .I see no lighting so maybe start there with a lamp on atable by the sectional. How do you use the chairs they need a light .The bookcases are kind of wrong for the sapce but if you love them keep them . As for actual new fruniture I really need that full room pic and a to scale floor plan woulfd be great too. All that posted here in comments just like you have been doing

Your floors look very nice! I think you just have too many different colours and styles going on. Here's one of many ideas showing a more neutral colour scheme with a corduroy sectional, leather (or leather look) armchairs, newer style shelving, coffee table, wall art, etc. Since I don't have a floor plan nor see the entire room, I don't know if the sectional is the best choice for the room.

joelcoqui, I live on Long Island as well, and I guarantee you that you can get the look of that home in France even here on LI. I furnished a home here with tag and estate sale furniture, ready-made curtains, and inexpensive rugs. It is also a very comfortable home and I can welcome friends and family without worrying about anything being too precious. You can do it too, it just takes a bit of time and attention.

I think your floors are absolutely perfect. I can't stand that greyed out vinyl I've seen so many places recently.

I cannot read the floor plan, the writing and lines are too light, can you run a pen over it?

Floors are gorgeous. I don’t think minimalist is the word you’re looking for. It might be worth your while to have an interior design consultation with a real person for a couple of hours just to get yourself on a track. The colour consultation would be a good place to start as somebody has mentioned. There’s no idea here as to your budget or what you even like. So some inspiration shots posted here would give people some idea as to a direction for your sense of style. Go online and take a look at some interior decor photos and post some shots of the kind of things that you like.

You did well on the floor plan, a few measurements missing but I think it should work.

What size is this table you love?

That 4 foot console is on the 13ft. wall that gets in the way of the club wing chairs. THe distance from sitting area to TV is 14 feet. There is serious plumbing behind TV wall so im afraid to install it on the wall.

What do you think of a layout like this?

Hmmm. What to do with big empty space by wet bar? Im concerned with what style of furniture to put. Coffee table?

Looking at your pictures it looks like all that's presently there is your TV with console below (which is narrower than the table) and I cannot see anything else. I've placed your 48 inch antique table where the TV is with 2 poufs underneath for visual impact and extra seating when needed. Perhaps you can take another picture showing that corner so we can see what it looks like as this was the only picture showing that area:

It could look something like this:

Here are better pics of the space. Tv is actually 1.5" shorter on both sides than table. Hallway on left

Your trestle table can be used as a games table with chairs to fill the space in that area. However that space isn't large enough to bring the table more into the room without crowding the furniture so you'd have to pull the table away from the wall when in use.

Love the new layout that @lisedv posted above. It uses the space nicely without a lot of wasted space.

Unfortunately its right next to a pass hallway and the kitchen has a full dining table 10 feet away and I think it would look silly have back to back different tables. But I do like the seating set up further down in the room. We had the option to do that years ago but I dont remember the reason why we opted not to. Maybe because you cant see the television from the kitchen? I dont remember.

Then what about the first plan with the table against the wall with the 2 poufs. That area isn't all that large and wouldn't look any more empty than it is now with your TV in that space but your trestle table would now be in full view.

Hi joelcoqui! I just saw your inquiry-busy day yesterday.

I think that lisedv's layouts with the TV and seating in the fireplace area are much better options than what you have now. I hope that you can try them out and I think they'll work better for you.

Once you decide to change the layout, then you can concentrate on the furnishings and accessories. If you like a neutral palette like the one shown in the article I linked to, we can help you achieve that look.

First and foremost in my opinion is to change the wall color from gray to a warm-ish white. Then if you want a neutral rug, jute, seagrass or sisal would look great with your floors. And they are very reasonably priced. For the coffee table, I'd try to get something in a darker or natural color brown wood. Adding more natural wood will warm up the space, work with the floors and keep the neutral palette you want. You could also add green plants (live or not), baskets, and even some subtle color and pattern.

Also, regarding not seeing the TV from the kitchen, how much do you really watch TV while cooking or eating? My TV is in a separate room, and when I watch TV in the kitchen I do it on my laptop.

    Hi @joelcoqui,

As @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC, try moving your furniture in the room and if that works for you then we can all make suggestions for what you'll need to achieve a decor you'll love.

Wall color is natural linen ben moore. Nothing gray about it. Do you think 12 feet is enough for a 62" TV and sofas with coffee table??

  • PRO

Wow, on my monitor the walls look gray. Proof positive that you CANNOT rely on monitors or print to render color accurately.

Regarding your question about 12' being enough, I'm assuming you mean the fireplace wall. It's plenty big for a seating area with the TV opposite the sofa.
