Would you recommend painting dark wood in a kitchen like this white?

I don't mind the wood. What I hate is that you barely have any drawers, so I would want to spend money changing that and not the color.

No to paint because to me, besides the lack of drawers, the floor variations would still bother me regardless of cabinets.

Keep the wood cabs. They add warmth to the space.

I agree with chispa and roarah…the lack of bottom drawers is what bothers me, and dates the kitchen.

Is it a big project to convert the drawers?

New drawers plus paint sounds perfect. It’s not a big job, the challenge will be to find a custom cabinet shop that will do this kind of retrofit work

I don’t love the floors either but I don’t think we have it in our budget to do the kitchen and the floors right away. Thanks for the feedback!

spend time to get quotes. 1. more glass in uppers on left 2. possibly painting all the uppers a shade of white. . 3. quote for refacing the uppers and do those glass upper doors with that. 4. quote for replacing [all new ] lowers w drawer cabinets to work w the white on the uppers. 5. quote for refacing the lowers w transforming to drawers. Since budget is somewhat tight take the time to do cost analysis of the various options...see if something might fall into place the best for you. [not sure what you really envision] If you just want a small adjustment paint the island a rich white and get fun upholstered stools with armrests ...will be more comfortable. .

make the seating more inviting....if nothing else.

Paint the cabinets if you are also thinking of changing the counters, backsplash and floors.

Your kitchen is just fine, it just needs accessories and a rug or two, in color. Right now, it looks like you havent moved in yet. I wouldnt worry about drawers. I have had them in one kitchen, and I personally do not like them at all. You have enough drawers at the top of the doors, for most things, that need to go into a drawer. So to answer your question. No, to painting the wood cabinets. The cabinets look to be in great condition.

If your cabinets are in good condition I wouldn't paint them but rather work the surrounding decor. Replace the pulls with black ones, install a roman shade on the window, place thin washable runners on the floor, replace the pendants for more substantial ones, and also replace the 2 counter stools.

    Wow
This feedback is all so helpful, thank you! And yes, I should clarify we haven’t moved in yet. Just deciding what to spend money on and what to just work with.

Since you havent moved in yet, there may be other things, that will be a priority, dont start tearing anything apart until you have lived with it for a while, to see what works and what doesnt. One never knows, when something will break, and need to be taken care of so, its best not to tear something apart, that doesnt need to be torn apart. Save the money, until something breaks and absolutely needs to be done. In 6 months to a yr of living there, you will know what needs to be done, since living there will tell you that. Congratulations on your new home.

No don’t paint the cabinets. In six months if you don’t like them, consider having several more of the upper doors replaced with glass doors as someone else suggested. For instance, the ones to the left of the sink.

I would put some kind of colorful window treatment on the small window by the sink. Too bad there aren’t two windows, but maybe that’s an interior wall on the left side.

I have base cabinets doors enclosing drawers. That would probably be the least expensive way to go.

Congratulations on your new home! I will go a bit further than the others and say “Wait a year.” Use that time to look online, in magazines, etc. and save photos of everything you like for every room. Your personal style will become obvious as well as the kitchens you admire. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the kitchen you have. If you really, really need to change it after a year, spend time pricing refacing the cabinets, changing the countertops, etc. Ask neighbors for referrals to contractors you may need in the future.

You may be back here with questions on a bathroom instead. The kitchen seems to be in good condition, but living there will tell you if it’s functional for your lifestyle.
