Can I have both shelves and a mini chandelier over my farmhouse sink?

I'm renovating my kitchen to French country farmhouse style. I will have a farmhouse sink but no window above it. Since doing the dishes is my favorite chore, I want to make it look nice as I have no window to look out on. I'd like to put 1 or 2 shelves AND a mini chandelier. My electrician said they won't work together as the chandelier will hang over the shelves and block them, but I'm really trying to find a way to make it work! Maybe I do one lower shelf will lots of room above? Or put the chandelier further out from the wall, more like over me as I stand there than over the sink? Or switch to a small chandelier wall sconce that points down over the shelves? Please share any ideas and pics if you have! Thank you.

I think a lot depends on how much height and width you have there - I would search "farmhouse sink no window" to see tons of inspo photos and then you look at pics that are similar to your situation/set-up. Personally I would want the area as open as possible so would skip shelves but that's me

Can you draw a simple pic and note how high your ceilings are, how wide the space is? I don't think a chandelier is going to look right hung so close to a wall. Is there another place for it in the space and you hang a different kind of light here? Lala's pic is perfect.

We need to see the plan for that wall. I am curious why no window where you wash dishes if that is your fave place . I spend 5 mins max actaully washing dishes so I am confused .Usually French country kitchens have lots of windows so please post your plan here in a comment DO NOT start another post .

Of course you can - Just make sure to size everything properly. Maybe telling the contractor "chandelier" makes him think of some huge fixture. Find something that isn't too tall and looks good when hung higher ( think 6 1/2 ft up on an 8ft ceiling ) then have one or 2 shelves ( 10" deep ) the bottom one at about 55" and the next at 65-68" . Simple. The fixture should be out from the wall a bit but not out so far it is over your head.

I believe this is a good visual with a small chandelier. There is room for shelves.

I think the most important (and first) decisions are the wall treatment, shelf choice and placement, and how they are accessorized. The light should come last and complement vs overwhelm and I’d use a sconce or two depending on the space.

If you want a chandelier (complement the one used over sink) and hang over your table or in centre of kitchen.

Thank you everyone for your ideas and pics. Sounds like there is hope! Here's a rough draft of the space. Backsplash will be honed marble subway tile. Countertop will be grey soapstone. Faucet will be a curved gooseneck. Too late in the game to change the placement of the sink. I have an extension with windows on three sides but they are too large to put cabinets under, so making the best of it! Some photos of the space. Cabinets will line the unfinished area. Two large pantries will flank the arched window with a loveseat in the middle. A long console table with marble top will function as island in middle of both areas.

Instead of the word “chandelier” use the word “pendant”. That might help your contractor to understand. You will be using a small, narrow light fixture in that space to make it work. Some good photos here to help him/her understand.

Thank you! Here's a photo of the mini-chandelier I am considering. It is 15" high and 11" wide. Ceiling is 8 ft. I don't have an issue with it further in from the wall and more over the person standing at the sink (similar to MarleneM's photo), but contractor says that would be odd. I'll show him Marlene's pic.

So that would just fit - If you figure 15" high plus about 4"- 5" of chain/canopy. That would let you have a shelf at 56" above the floor and one about 10" above that. That should leave about 10" of space between the top shelf and the fixture.

Please do not have that fixture any further out than centered over the sink. Do not have it over your head - it will feel too low. I would put it so the fixture is just about 3 " -6" off the wall. That puts the center of the fixture approx 9-12" off the wall.

JMO - please everybody check my thoughts and math! LOL

The thing I worry about with that scenario is how much shadow is cast by the shelves and will you have enough light to do task work at the sink?

Thanks everyone, I think if I go with one shelf at 18-20 inches above the counter I'll have plenty of room for a 15" chandelier with 4-5" of chain and can center it over the sink! I'll post pics after!

I have seen mirrors used over sinks that had no window.

The chandelier feels more French Provincial than French Farmhouse. It feels quite delicate/formal, but don’t know your overall direction. It will an easier decision when kitchen is almost complete/you have a better sense of what suits.

These have a farmhouse feel. How much light you require is also important.
