We have a local orchid store to supply my Winter Hobby. Here are a few of mine in bloom.

These little Kinganiums are imported from Australia. They have a perfumed scent....lovely!

    Pretty!

If I can't eat it or smoke it, I don't grow it. I leave that for her.

Very nice, Nicole. I’ve had this phal since Valentines Day 2011 and it blooms reliably at this time of year. Pic taken today.

I also have a 10 year old Dendrobium superbum that I have yet to entice into bloom.

    Pretty!

I brought all of my orchids with us with we moved almost 4yrs ago. I am down to three plants. One just finished blooming last week. They were spoiled in our last house. All of these photos feature re-blooming before the move. I miss this.

@nicole, your orchids are lovely. I don't grow orchids on purpose, but I try to keep the ones I receive as gifts alive. They will rebloom usually. It's hard to take a photo because they are backlit by the sun. They live by the kitchen sink. They are all common species from Trader Joe's.

Mine are getting ready to bloom - they have buds - but not open yet. For some reason, they have been late this year.

I also don't have any exotic types. I've only recently learned that I haven't been cursed with a black thumb - and have been learning about various plants - including orchids.

@Allison0704 - your photos are beautiful. I am sad that you only have three of the left!

    Beautiful orchids, Nicole and everyone.

Allison, I immediately thought of yours, and your gorgeous sunroom.

I’ve never had any, but really want to one of these days after Baby gets older. She would think it was a new toy brought home just for her. Ask the other plants I have. :D

As a kid I would save my birthday and Xmas money to buy orchids from the large orchid grower in the town that I grew up in. I have had a life long interest and career in horticulture and it started at a very young age. I still grow a few orchids these days, some cattleya seedlings that I will grow to flowering along with some hardy terrestrial orchids.

Here are some that I have grown in my back yard in Los Angeles. I got rid of all of them when we moved to the desert.

Cymbidium Golden Elf - blooms late fall

Maxillaria Tenuifolia - this one has a strong fragrance of coconut

    Another Cymbidium

    Donna Hybrid

Epidendrum - this one blooms all year and is very prolific

Small Cymbidium given to me by a friend when she moved from San Diego to Michigan

    Cattelayas:

Another Cymbidium - blooms in January and most of the winter

    Epidendrum Raniferum

Rhyncholaelia digbyana - This one also has a nice fragrance. I had to move it to a special location in the pergola where squirrels could not get to it, as they would eat all the new shoots as soon as they appeared.

@Fun2BHere....The orchid store, here in Colorado, is very pricey! They have a potter that makes HUGE beautiful pottery bowls, then they plant 6 orchids in it with Spanish moss on top...$700! And....they sell out! Then if you trade in your out-of-bloom orchid they give you $5 store credit to buy another one. They are having an out-of-bloom sale right now, $3.50each. I'm ready to go buy more...but...I'd like a cat or Onc orchid....waiting to get a variety....so much FUN just to see what they have....we're in the middle of a snow storm...so it's like island hopping in the Winter!

Beautiful orchids everyone! The orchid forum used to be fairly busy but all of the regulars and old timers have stopped posting. They have moved on but there are still garden webbers here visiting these forums, they are not posting to them though. It would be so nice if there was a regroup and orchid growers and admirers out there that have a genuine interest and want to talk and learn about their plants can go to share their experiences. They are an amazing group of plants!

Such dramatic beauty! So welcome on a winter day here. I wasn't aware any orchids were scented.

I did get two gift orchids to rebloom, but I'll never become a *grower* One man I know had to put an addition on his already huge home near Chicago for his orchids. He flies home from winters in Florida, just to tend his hundred-plus plants.

Beautiful orchids shown here. I grow alot of plants, but sadly, I do not have a green thumb for orchids. Or perhaps I do not have patience for orchids!! I do occasionally buy an orchid plant and enjoy it's blooms, but then it is gone. Cheaper than fresh flowers!

I make my own mixed arrangements to put on the coffee table and kitchen counter. They last several months. If the orchid plant still looks good after the flowers die, I move them outside to our lanai, where they are mostly ignored, except for being watered once a week. I looked yesterday and six of the outside orchids have stalks/buds.
