I am not much of a mivie person, seldom watch them and go to see rhem at the theatre even less often. But I adore Timotheé Chalomet so did go see A Complete Unknown, which I loved. Am seeing it agaiin today with my 15 year old grandson. We warched couple of shorts about making the movie to give him a little more context. I might see Wicked sometime, as I did enjoy the play.

I won't vote since I have not seen them all. But I will opine on what I have seen:

• Wicked: So fabulous. I was impressed at AG's comedic talent (who knew?). And just a delicious spectacle and so hummable. Loved loved it. I had taken my girls to see it on Broadway when they were in elementary school. They love the movie so i was thinking of taking them to see it again, but worry it may fall short of the movie. It is that good.
• A Complete Unknown: Not a Dylan fan, but loved everything about this movie. I became so immersed in the story and gained new insight and appreciation into the music.

The only others I have seen are:

• I'm Still Here Overly long but excellent and a poignant story about the disappearance of a husband and father during Brazil's military dictatorship. I alway prefer movies about real events, and this delivered.
• Small Things Like These An irish film about the Magdalena Laundries. I was not familiar with this story. Excellent acting, a little slow in points. Worth watching.

Only thing we saw was A Complete Unknown. Chalamat was great but so was Edward Norton as Supporting actor.

Not sure when .... but Wicked will be streaming on Peacock, I believe this month.

Seen Conclave, Anora, The Substance, Emilia Perez. No interest in Wicked. Waiting for the Brutalist to come down in price. DH can't bear Dylan so haven't seen A Complete Unknown as yet

On balance I'd go with Emilia Perez or Anora.

My daughter has planned a "Wicked" watch party at my house in a few weeks (along with making homemade cheesecake - it's my mom's recipe and I took it over when she passed - now my younger daughter wants to learn + we will be making meatballs together - mine have been voted the "best" by all of my sisters + nieces/nephews + daughters + BILs - and it's all about how it smells/looks vs. actual measurements - as most Italian recipes!)

I took my two daughters to see it on Broadway many years ago - my daughter said that the movie is better than the show (unusual). I've wanted to watch it - but since making the watch party plan, I've had to wait.

The only movie I've seen is "A Complete Unknown" - which I wasn't excited to go see because I'm not a big Dylan fan. However, the movie was really good - and, like Mtn, I gained a new appreciation for his music.

My daughters and I used to go see a lot of movies together - I did a lot of legal work for AMC Theatres and had an annual gold pass card = free movie tickets whenever I wanted. AMC would host a big Oscar party at an old (beautiful) downtown theatre every year - it was a lot of fun + some actors would attend each year. I actually met Edward Norton one of the years - he was extremely nice and I think he's a very talented actor (minus "The Hulk" LOL).

I haven't gone to the movies nearly as much over the past several years - and feel out of touch.

I have seen Wicked and The Substance. That’s it! So I have no business voting but I do like to watch the Oscars.

Other than Wicked, the only movie I’ve seen in the theater recently is A Real Pain, which we liked a lot.

I saw “I’m Still Here” yesterday and was absolutely blown away- far and away the best movie I saw this year. I am rooting for it to win Best Actress in addition to Best Picture and Best International Film. It was so masterful and powerfully moving. I loved learning about the backstory (the director, Walter Salles, grew up with the kids in the true story). It didn’t seem overly long, to me…quite unlike “The Brutalist”, which I expected to like but really did not- although I thought Adrian Brody was excellent. It just fell short for me in many ways. I also loved “A Complete Unknown”, although I thought it had some flaws. This was a subject and time I know well; I loved how I was transported back to those times! Seeing The Village recreated so realistically was really moving to me, as was feeling newly stunned by those incredible, cataclysmic songs all over again. I also watched “Conclave” and thought it was excellent-great acting. I’ll watch most of the rest of the nominees once they’re streaming for free.

I’ve seen Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Perez, and Wicked. They are very different from each other, but I enjoyed them all. I want to see The Brutalist next.

I’m not sure that I can watch The Nickel Boys (I read the book a few years ago and it broke my heart) or The Substance (sounds scary). I am hoping to see the others. No idea who will win.

I also loved “A Real Pain”- I watched it twice in two days:). I guess it’s fair to say I am partial to movies without special effects- give me people, just being human.

With 10 movies nominated for Best Picture, it's hard to see them all.

Texanjana, Substance is more of a thriller than horror I would say.

Edit: Wow, Demi! She looks amazing. I used to watch her on General Hospital in the 1980's, so it's pretty incredible. She's about 6 months older than me.

Timothee in the buttery yellow suit looks great, too.

I've only seen Conclave, which I liked a lot. I thought the ending was a bit gratuitous.

I have loved Dylan since my late teens, so I'd rather listen to his music all day than watch the movie. Maybe I'll change my mind, but I dunno.

I've only seen Wicked, was a fun women's afternoong out - surprised me, my friends were sooo moved, I felt less so .

Wow, The Brutalist and Anora had a night. I don’t think A Complete Unknown won anything. ?

I never even heard of Anora before tonight.

It is playing in an art house cinema near us, but the last time we went there is was with friends we did not know well and so I did not suggest Anora. When I invite someone to a play or a movie I feel responsible for every line in it! 🙄

DH and I saw all 10 plus the live action and animated shorts - all but Wicked in the last week. Our theater does and Oscar Week special where you buy a pass for $40 and can see all the best picture nominated films as well as the shorts -- so we did the full marathon (saw Wicked for the 3rd time). This is one of the few times we've seen them all and it feels like an accomplishment. But it was a lot to process in 7 days. I don't think I would have a picked what Hollywood picked (isn't that the norm?) but they didn't pick any of my least goods, so there's that.

Texanjana, you might be disappointed by Nickel Boys. It runs 2 hr 20 min and I was checking the time half way through it. I left thinking that was one to read the book. They had a good story to tell, but the three of us all felt the way they told it was lacking - that it both dragged and left gaps.

I have only seen Wicked and Conclave ; of the two I liked Conclave better and agree 100% with Bunny’s assessment. Wicked is wearisomely worthy… I thought Ariana Grande was much better in her role— and had a much better role— than Cynthia Erive. I don’t mind a good allegory but I don’t want a musical theatre lecture that isn’t clever enough to provide a counterpoint to the sermon. I read the book on which the movie is based and it portrayed Elphaba as a real, flawed human rather than a green saint— and was the better for it.

I'm a huge Dylan fan, and loved the movie. Timothee Chalamet is extraordinary. The movie is filled with music, so that's a plus. I didn't realize Pete Seeger discovered him until watching this.

I saw several, but not all, of the nominated films. However, on Saturday I saw Nickel Boys, which I thought was rather daring (in its POV filming). That perspective didn't work all the time, but it was often very effective and moving, and served the storyline well. The two actors of the title were terrific, and the lighting was luminous and beautiful. It's not an easy movie to watch, but well worth it, and I was sorry it didn't get any awards.

A friend of mine in the UK recommended the book to me shortly after it came out. Same title as the movie, "Small Things Like These" by Claire Keegan, quite short (just over 100 pages), and incredibly moving and powerful. She's a remarkable writer.

I can also highly recommend the movie A Quiet Girl, based on Keegan's novella Foster. She's an outstanding writer.

I don't believe he did, chalk it up to the factual flexibility movie makers have.

Aside from his obvious talent and genius, I think his meteoric rise was attributed to his affiliation with agent Albert Grossman. Grossman was a powerful man in the music industry. He also managed (and assembled) Peter Paul and Mary (to start a list continued below) and was responsible for contributing significantly to their exposure and success.

There was only so far any artist(s) could go if restricted to the NY folk scene. Grossman made sure that albums were recorded and strongly promoted for his clients. That was what garnered them a national audience.

Grossman was the #1 big name in the folk segment. He also managed Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, The Band, Phil Ochs, Richie Havens, and more. He was a co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival as a showcase for his clients and others.

If anyone knows something different (aside from the movie portrayal), I'll enjoy learning more.

John Hammond, a producer at Columbia Records, discovered Dylan. I loved the movie, but it was not fact- based, and this was intentional. Dramatic license.

Yes, a beautiful look, and I was happy for her. But when she opened her mouth to speak, dh and I both were very taken aback. Guess we’d never heard her speak. Unbelievable she never worked on making it less, um, unpleasant. . Also, she looked a bit awkward, as though she was not having any fun, and even irritated. .

Selena Gomez changed for the after party and look gorgeous for that, too.

I love Clare Keegan's writing. The Quiet Girl was a beautiful movie. I think Small Things Like These was kind of a miss?
