How to make front door surrounding area look better?

last year

My husband feels the way the front door area looks like we have a manufactured home. How can we make it give less of that appearance?
TIA!

Some background would help. Was the front entry originally designed with the house or is it an enclosed breezeway? Was the garage added later?

@apple_pie_order I bought it like this. So, I honestly have no clue. I personally think the sellers altered the front entry way.

Paint the window trim and door trim to match the trim on the rest of the house. Remove enough asphalt and replace with pavers to make a large area of pavers in front of the door. Paint the door a pretty color. Put pots of plants on either side of the steps.

I don't have design software but I sketched a concept with a white pergola with gray house.

Thanks for info. There may be info at city hall in the form of permits issued for work on the house since it was built. It could be fun to see what has changed.

Easy changes: paint the two white windows on the entry to match the rest of the tan windows. Then paint the white front door trim the same tan color. Choose a darker paint color or the same tan for the front door itself.

There appears to be a white painted box sticking up behind the front entry way. It could be painted to match the house.

Switching the two front entry windows to casements would look good and be more in keeping with the rest of the house architecture.

I suspect the porch was designed to allow a parking space in front of it. Is there one? If you don't need the parking space, the front porch could be replaced with a more substantial one.

Your house is a great 80’s contemporary, the entry does look like a mobile home. Take your cues from that triple window on the second floor that probably over the original entry… replace the small vinyl double hung window and the plywood around it with one large glass panel (well two, basically oversized sidelights). Get a modern flush door and paint it a color. Replace the steps so they span the whole entry.

@apple_pie_order and @PPF. Yeah, the gray looking box on the roof behind the entryway space are the skylights which are ove r the dining room.

I concur with your husband. Yes to what everyone said about the windows on either side of the door. The pitch of the stairs is way too steep. Have them come out much farther, and build them with risers so you don’t see through them. The asphalt coming right up to the door adds to the look of having parked your house on a slab. If you don’t want to landscape the ground around it, add low container beds to the right of the stairs. Your plantings on the left side of the driveway are beautiful and you need them around the foundation of the house as well.

I would continue the roof line, you'll probably also need to extend the siding on the right side as it seems to be lower. I also suggest you paint the siding in a warm gray that coordinates better with the roof, and paint all trim and doors in black. Replace your front door and porch to that it will look like the main entrance and not a side or back door. You can replace the sconces with a simple contemporary style and rebuild a wider porch with more contemporary railing. I would also separate the walkway from the driveway and do pavers in the walkway. You can also add a pergola above the garage door for an extra touch! As you most likely wouldn't be able to match the roof shingles, I show a black metal roof for the extension.

@PPF. Would it still be possible to do that even though the skylight is there on the roof like that? The big grey box on the lower roof?

We would not be able to pull off a charcoal gray, would we? @lisedv

Some option to improve roof above the garage

Before going through the exspense of windows and roof lines, IMHO it’s the stairs are not doing any favors. It looks like a backyard deck.

Look into new stair landing as well.

    Lisedv shows a good example.

@eld6161 thank you! There are definitely great and beautiful examples of changes we could make in this thread, but doing what you mentioned seems the most attainable in the now.
