Can't quite get it right; suggestions please

last month

We love the gallery wall. It's made up some of our favorite paintings. My husband and I are debating. I think it's about 1-1.5" too low. He does not. Thoughts? Also not sure how to style the credenza under it. Love the family pics, but feel like it could be better. I know the dining room chairs on each side are not optimal, but there is literally no where else to put them. If they are at the table it looks way too crowded. Dining room is small. Came from a room that sat 10 comfortably to more of a six person room. I don't want to get rid of them cause there are times we will snug in and I don't really want to put them in the garage. So all that to say, they stay. I might be able to move one for a plant on the right side. Thoughts?

I do t think there’s anything wrong with the chairs there. I would just move them closer to that credenza so they don’t look like they’re ‘floating’ so far off to either side. You did a nice job with the gallery wall. I know it’s a pain to re-hang but I agree with you that it’s a smidge too low.

Also, moving the chairs closer will make the overall arrangement look wider than your pictures which will help it all feel more visually balanced.

I'm not loving the way you arranged the art ... I think there is a better layout and it doesn't have to be symmetrical.

Here is one I did with my mother in their previous house. A few more things usually got displayed on the cabinet, but they hadn't been unpacked when we hung the art.

Chispa, that is lovely. I am a symmetrical person, while I appreciate your wall, I could not do it LOL Marilyn, thanks for your feedback. I will scootch the chairs in.

Symmetry works better with an even number of items.

I do think the entire installation is a tish low and I think all the smalls on the credenza aren't working.

AiFL, I agree the frames aren’t working ,but are not exactly sure what to put there. I think the paintings being to low are throwing me off. Anything I think of seems like they would block the paintings. Anything suggestions?

    Too low ;)

Agree chairs closer to credenza - move them in at least by half of empty space. Not sure about too low for all on wall. But, try moving the center one up just a tad. Then, fill the space under it with more of the taller picture frames. Leave the black one there but move at least 2 of the gold vertical rectangular shape frames to the middle space - 1 each side of the black frame. Move the 2 horizontal rectangular shape frames to 1 each under the 2 outside horizontal frames on wall. Scatter the smaller frames around these 4 main larger pic frames & tighten up the space to leave some of credenza top bare.. These are minor adjustments overall but I think it will balance the up & down shapes & widths. If you have a small bowl of flowers it might be nice in the center space too - similar to roses on coffee table but not so bright.

KW, great suggestion! Thanks. Would you add a lamp?

I think the spacing is too great between them. i would try putting the three vertical pieces on the bottom with the tops all lined up. the large one in the middle and then put the two horizontal pieces centered above . make the spacing a bit tighter when you try this.

Would something like this work? On the other side of the room is our kitchen with a blue island and backsplash.

    WSE, thanks!

Played around a bit based on the suggestions. Thoughts?

I like pic #2 of the first 3 pics you posted. The green plant in middle of buffet with some of the top of buffet clear & showing. Looks very balanced with 3 different groupings & the center one ’heaviest’ with the plant balances the one wall art above. The 2 chairs look much more united with the overall arrangement sitting closer to the buffet.

KW…thanks. That was one of my favorites and also liked the last one too. It amazing how different it looks.

Amazing what just a few little tweaks can make isn’t it! IMO the arrangement in the last one looks like a bunch of pics in frames scattered around. The one I like best & you like too, looks intentional & curated. Because you set up 3 distinct groupings & cleared some open space on the buffet top, the eye looks at each arrangement individually & pauses between arrangements. With the last one the eye scans the entire array but doesn’t take in much detail just sees a bunch of frames. That’s a big difference— IMHO. Thinking about that, you have enough pics that you might be able to create ”stars” for each grouping of photos. That is, each grouping has a star - i.e. baby / parents / full family. It’s fun to look at photos & see the changes in the star from photo to photo. Harder to do that if not grouped by star. I hope that makes sense.

    KW, it does! Thanks!

We are “Less is more” type. Using art as an anchor, changing the accessories periodically.

I am not a decorator. Love your artwork and blue and white plant pot. For some reason, my eye is wanting to see the artwork hung higher and tighter over the buffet. It keeps going to the level of the TV over the fireplace. Kinda like comparing/competing with it. You seem to have wonderful height in that room and I am wondering what is on the other side for balance. It takes time to adjust to a new setting for cherished items. Take your time.

HU, I was not at home when the art installer came to hang all our paintings; husband was. My first reaction when I walked into the door was ‘“it’s too low” . I had laid everything on with the spacing written out too. Shoulda stayed home from work! ;)

Ann - I think the art is hung in right spot - it is lower than TV but not by much & TV on a different wall & angle. I see that art is hung at height of arched hall entry to right of it & on the same wall. I would hope an art installer has some skill & knowledge that I don’t.

"Art installer" = a handyman that charges more!

(sometimes you might get lucky and get someone that does art installations for museums as their main job)

I have a large 5 ft x 5 ft heavy old carving, so I had an "art installer" come by, recommended by the frame shop I had used. My father had hung this carving in 3 previous houses and told me how it should be done. The "art installer" wanted to do something totally different that didn't make sense. Didn't end up using him.

I've always hung my own art ... apprenticed under my parents!

I would move all small objects from the top of credenza. Instead will bring two big lamps for better balance.

Smaller lamps would work as well.

Chispa , LOL my husband is 6’6” and I am 5’. We have learned over the course of our 41 year marriage that ‘eye level’ means very different things to each of us. ;) We have some fairly big art and have used him several times; he has a very good eye.

HU, this is either side of the room.

Ann, what do you think about finding a pair of pretty pillows for the chairs? I think it would make them look more intentional in a living room setting, rather than just being stored there.

  • last month

    Jilly, great idea!

  • last month

Jilly, I think too big, and probably not quite right but have these pillows. First pic, like the colors with the chairs. The others pick up a contrasting color in the rug.

    last modified: last month

I agree, too big, but I really like the elephant and animal print ones style-wise! Can you find those or similar in a smaller size? I’d do matching pillows.

  • last month

Jilly, I am not sure. I purchased them a while ago. I always hang onto pillow and if I need to change them out, I buy pillow covers (and maybe I am a hoarder LOL)

  • last month

I am, too. I’m obsessed with pillows.

This is a great excuse for you to find a couple more. :D

  • last month

Jilly, LOL much to my husband’s chagrin!

  • last month

How about the smaller sized lumbar pillows?

  • last month

KW…yes, I think that is going to be a better size.

Ann, I never use eye-level as a basis for hanging art. I eye-ball everything and my goal is to have it look balanced (not necessarily symmetrical) on the wall and the overall space.

You have nice pieces that just need a bit of repositioning for a balanced look!
