Thoughts on this wallpaper

Need to paint our bedroom. Thinking of using this wallpaper behind the bed, and then painting the rest of the room in Sherwin Williams dewdrop(top) or mountain air(lower). There wont be a lot of wallpaper behind the bed because there is a window and it is in a dormer.

The picture is the exact layout of my bedroom but is not my room.

The bedding will be a darker green matelasse coverlet which I own, but I will want to add another layer and new shams and throw pillows.

That's pretty! I like abstract nature-y patterns. I like the lower left paint color better than the other one. What kind of headboard do you have?

I would paper the entire room. It's a lovely pattern.

    I have a fairly simple(Shakeresque) cherry bed.

I would like to get new bedside plug in wall sconces for reading, and thought these were cute Pooky lights

Love that wallpaper! I also prefer the Mountain Air paint color. Looking forward to seing this come together.

@Feathers11 Thank you for saying the pattern is lovely. Papering the whole room would be overkill for hubby. And it would be a lot of work for me :) I can handle a wall but this room has SOOOO many angles I think papering it would do me in. Our bed is under one dormer but there are 2 more that impact the room. It is kind of a crazy layout, it is a very old house.

I am kind of in love with this printed natural fiber rug from Ballard. Does it work?

@3katz4me I found a picture of my headboard with 2 furry interlopers and an unmade bed.

Very pretty wallpaper and I think the rug would work. You can alway buy the smallest one to check the look. I can't wait to see the finished product.

ETA: I think I'm much more of a pattern girlie than a lot of posters here.

    Rug added to mockup

That rug wouldn’t work for me but I see lots of mixed patterns chosen by professionals that are too ”busy” for my taste. So I’m not a good judge of that.

I like the wallpaper and the rug, but not together. I don't think the dormer wall is a good fit for any wallpaper. I won't do it justice. They don't you drench the room in the paint (walls, ceiling, trim, doors, windows) and find a larger pattern rug (not huge, just larger than your choice above) for a bigger impact and coziness. I like the color palette of the wallaper, so you could go with those colors.

Thanks, for your thoughts Allison. I will have to play around with the sample when it arrives to see if it will be worth the effort. RE color drenching, I do plan on painting the ceiling and the walls the same color. The trim already is painted a color I think will work well, you can see it in the picture with the dog, but I am open to changing it if it doesnt work.

I will hold off on the rug, because I am also not convinced.

I do like the color scheme and it will work well with our master bath which is in progress of renovation(mostly white, with a hint of sage).

No. An accent wall in here will look unfinished, like you tried hanging paper but quit in the middle. Not enough of it will show to matter. Look on line at plenty of pics with entire dormer attic rooms wallpapered and you will see it is the right way to do it.

I 100% understand if that isn't the look your husband wants, and it is a ridiculous amount of work. So go big and make this room feel really complete in other ways instead.

I love your trim color with the darker of your two blues. Paint all the walls, ceilings, and dormers in that blue. Perhaps you can use the wallpaper on roller shades so you can still get some of it in the room? Or find fabric similar to the wallpaper you like and use it instead to have shams or a throw made for the foot of your bed.

I think the wallpaper (beautiful, btw!) will be very nice on that one wall; in a way it will act as a larger heardboard and foil for the bedding. My preference is for the lighter, top color if everything is going to be that same shade, and I’d also use that rug! The colors are all found in the wallpaper but with a completely different look, and the pattern IMO is a good scale and size to go with the wallpaper. You’ve made good selections and I would at least try these things together in large sample sizes if you can (order one roll or memo sample of the wallpaper and a small size in the rug pattern. Looking forward to seeing this take shape!

I also LOVE the wallpaper and painting the room the background color will look fantastic! The rug...no...that I don't like. It doesn't compliment the wallpaper or paint color....it just seems off to me.

I really like that lovely wallpaper.

I saved this room on IG a long time ago because I liked how nice the wallpaper looked just on the bed wall:

Obviously not like your room or style, but is an example of a wallpaper accent wall adding a lot of charm and interest. I think a more subtle paper like yours and the above work better as bedroom accent walls than big, bold patterns and colors.

(On a sidenote, I wonder how many times they bump that chandelier. Odd placement.)

Pretty sconce, too. I agree that I think you could find a better rug.

Can’t wait to see what you decide! I’m looking for a plug-in sconce for my guest room, but am not sure exactly where to place it. You’ll be my inspiration. :)

I love the wallpaper and the idea of an accent wall in a bedroom. Here are some with a window and I think they all look lovely!

I'd like to see a dark green from the wallpaper as a rug color. I think it would complement the wall color nicely.

I am excited about this project, and I do really like the wallpaper. We shall see if I like it as much when the sample arrives.

Thanks for all the helpful direction, lots of good ideas.

These comments just go to show how subjective this all is. I was going to post @Jilly 's pic and a few of the other ones below as examples of how bad it looks to use wallpaper as an accent in an attic instead of papering everywhere!

I forgot to post Sue’s room as inspiration in my last post — she did an accent wall in her bedroom and it turned out so lovely:

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6476487/bedroom-elements-are-coming-together

”Look on line at plenty of pics with entire dormer attic rooms wallpapered ….”

” I was going to post @Jilly 's pic and a few of the other ones below as examples of how bad it looks to use wallpaper as an accent in an attic instead of papering everywhere!”

@Kendrah, I don’t think local’s bedroom is an attic room. If you notice in my post, I said the attic room I shared isn’t like her room — I was only showing it for the wallpaper behind the bed.

I’ve seen lots of beautiful examples of wallpaper heavily broken up in rooms due to windows, doorways, sloped ceilings, and other features. The pattern and colors of the one she likes could be a good choice for the way her room is set-up.

“These comments just go to show how subjective this all is.”

Of course it’s all subjective. Every decor/fashion/etc thread here is.

Update: got the wallpaper sample and the paint chips, very pleased. Will be going forward with a wallpaper order and picking up the paint, hopefully this weekend. No decisions about sconces or a rug yet.

I’m sure those colors and pattern are just lovely together, and am looking forward to seeing them in your room!

Can’t wait to see the update. No to the rug. I would buy the rug last. Love the sconces. Once you have the paper up, find bedding, then rug. The wall paper is going to be the star in the room, so that needs to be considered when choosing the rest.

ooh I really love it all. Which paint color did you decide?

At first I thought no to the rug, but the more I see it the more I like it for the room.

Looking forward to seeing it come together.

@salonva I will confess I have not 100% picked the paint color yet. I cam home from the paint store with the 2 I planned to pick up and about 7 more. I have narrowed it down to the original 2.

I review them in different lights, they are very similar. I think I am leaning toward DewDrop, sometimes MountainAir goes a bit too green.

Here they are on the jamb of my closet door

Have you tried testing paints with Samplize? (not a paid endorsement .🤣 )

  • last month

    No, for a few reasons.

    - I tend to overthink and if I go down that road once, it will become always. So, I dont want to open the door.

    - I ”should” be able to do without.

    - Paintstores near me dont have and so it would be another thing to order to be delivered. (carbon footprint)

    - More in waste stream (carbon footprint)

(And I have no problem ordering things when necessary, I just try to not order so much)

In this case either of these colors will be very nice, I dont need to get too too obsessive. lol!

I just keep going back to look at it, i adore the colors with the door.

I also now understand the orangish flower in the rug. I felt the pattern of the rug may be too similar in scale and form to the paper (I find it so much easier to mix curvilinear patterns with stripes, checks or very small scale florals). However, with the rug being on a different plane, it probably doesn't matter the way it would if you had two pillows those two patterns ,,, if that makes sense.
