Last day for comments to make get more monarch protection, Mar 12, 202

Sorry for the late notice, but I received an email from the Native Plant Society of NJ about a proposed changed to treat monarch butterflies as threatened under the endangered species act. Here is a section copied from the email including links to make your comments and for more information.

'We have a last-minute call to action. We have recently become aware that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has proposed listing the Monarch Butterfly as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act and our comments are due tomorrow, 12 March!

This is a crucial step in addressing the alarming decline of both eastern and western monarch populations, which have suffered losses of 80% and 95% respectively due to habitat destruction, pesticide use, and climate change. Estimates suggest that by 2080 there is a 99% chance that the western monarch, one of America's most iconic insect species, will be extinct. Many environmental organizations including the Xerces Society, The National Wildlife Federation, Monarch Watch, the World Wildlife Fund, and Bergen County Audobon [sic] support listing the monarch as threatened.

What You Can Do

The comment period for this proposal closes on March 12, 2025. We encourage all members to submit their comments in support of listing the Monarch Butterfly as a threatened species.
