Seeking design help with an odd room

This room is a “walkthrough” to get to the garage and basement. The half wall hides the stairs to the basement. There is a “bar height” counter with opening to the kitchen. The room is too small to use as a dining room. The door leads to the garage which makes it a high traffic area.

Look into custom built-ins for extra storag/ mud room.

Or, remove all the chairs and get a small scaled L shaped sectional to go in the corner.

It will look visually neater and can be a cozy space to read or nap.

You say that it is too small to use as a dining room. Is that what you wish it were? We could maybe help you fit a dining table in there. If not, making it a cozy reading space with places for outdoor wear is a good use of the space.

With all the angles in the pictures you posted it's difficult to see where is what. Can you post more picture of each wall straight on as well as a hand drawn floor plan showing all dimensions, doors, windows, entrances to the room. We'll then be able to figure out and make valuable suggestions as to what can be done as far as layout in this room.

Please don’t be judgemental but how do I “draw” the floorplan?

Please don’t be judgemental but how do I “draw” the floorplan?

Draw an outline of the floor with openings for windows and doors. Measure the length of the walls, window, and doors and write them in the corresponding areas of the drawing. Take a pic of the drawing and post it.. all you need is paper, pencil and a tape measure

If you go through the gate to the stairs often, I think you need to clear a path. It looks like this is a puppy hangout so you might want to lean into that function and organize the space for their bedding and storage. Do you need a drop zone coming up the stairs? That’s another function to incorporate - maybe small cabinet or shelves on the half wall? Maybe a short couch or loveseat where the 2 chairs are for more comfy seating? I’m just throwing out some ideas here to spark thought about what the room does and what you want it to do in the flow of your home.

If your pups are playful, I'd be careful not to put seating too close to the half wall so they don't accidentally go over.

With the additional pictures I was able to figure out the floor plan. Now all you need to do is indicate the dimensions.

If large enough to do something other than a walk-through room, what would you like to do with this room? Is this used as an entry where you need storage for coats, boots, shoes, etc.? And what are the chairs in the room presently used for?

Slip covered is a good choice for washing

Store dog items and of course a bed.

Maureen is spot on. I would add that a small table and cushioned dining chair by the window wall would be nice for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. A place to read, etc.

Would it work as a breakfast room?

We really do need to know the dimensions and something about the people who will be using the room and what the needs are for those people.

How many people will be sitting in the room?

What will you be doing when sitting in the room? Morning coffee? Evening reading? Do you need a place to build a puzzle or to sew or to play board games or cards? Do you want a TV in the room?

It looks like you need a better storage solution for coats than the coat tree, which looks overwhelmed by the number of coats? How many coats do you have hanging on the coat tree?

Do you need storage for wet shoes or boots as well?

If this were my space I would get a narrow room divider for in front of the 1/2 wall, and a matching piece for right inside the door for hanging coats and put a small table with 4 chairs for building puzzles or working on crafts.

But that fits my needs and may not fit your needs.

    Loveseat and 2 chairs

    2 recliners and a tv

It looks like it is meant to be a breakfast room. What time of day does the sun come in that beautiful window? Depending on your needs, I would make it either a mudroom, a breakfast room, or a sun room with only two chairs and maybe a bistro set.

One more thought. You kitchen looks small. Do you need a pantry? That extra room could serve as a pantry with closed cabinets to hold crockpot, big serving dishes, holiday dishes, extra food, linens. Or, if you are drinkers, it could extend the kitchen as a bar area. A wine refrigerator, a surface for preparing drinks, storage for glasses and bottles.

Here's the floor plan to scale with the given dimensions. You didn't give too much info about how you want to use the room other than you seemed to like the sunroom idea. So below are a few suggestions showing natural fibre/bamboo roman shades, 2 rattan chairs and side table, jute rug, TV cabinet or bookcase, wall tree with bench and storage.

If you could lose the ledge in the window I would remove it.

Heidi Stalley Please tell us more about the household and potential uses of the room.

How many people will be using the room? Do you want it to just look better or could it add functionality to your home? (Do you need pantry space, room for coat storage, a quiet reading area, an office, or a game / puzzle / craft area). What are the pain points in your current home?

I would like to use it as more of a sitting room for reading or just hanging without a tv. I’d like to put the dog beds in that room so our Tv area isn’t crowded with dog beds. I appreciate everyone’s input thank you!
