Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Living Room Combo Help

last modified: 12 months ago

Hi! I need help with this space. This is the extension of the kitchen (behind the recliner is a 4 seat kitchen island that is white quartz). Do I put a cabinet of some sort against the wall under the air unit, small leaf drop 2 seat table, plant something or other or something else? There is a dining room on this floor too so we don't need that. Thanks in advance!!!

Fixed, and here is one more!

Thanks for the help! I like the idea of a cabinet of some sort with perhaps a large floor plant in the corner. Any suggestions for cabinets?

Thanks you!!!! This is super helpful! I can see it coming together now!

The area in front of the sliders was meant to serve as a spot for a breakfast table.........

If you only eat at the island, use the space for something else. What? Who knows, because posting a floor plan with dimensions would help, or draw and measure alllllll of this and post a drawing with dimensions.

Not loving those two rugs together ( sorry ) and love the huge recliner even less: )But feet and inches inform everything and is better than a thousand guesses posted here.....( get a bracket for the tv and mount on the wall )

That sounds like a versatile space with lots of potential. If you want something functional, a sleek console table or a small storage cabinet could work well under the air unit. If you're leaning more decorative, a statement plant or a gallery wall could add personality. A small drop-leaf table is a great option if you’d like a flexible seating area without taking up too much space. Since you already have a dining room, you could also consider a cozy reading nook or a stylish bar cart. Hope that helps!

I'm starting by replacing the rug. Thoughts on colors? Grey? Off white?

    Which rug? You have two....

I'm looking to get a larger one as suggested for in front of the TV and toss the others. Just not sure what color to go with... dark, neutral?

How can we even inform a color you might like? No.not dark. The coffee table is dark. There is NO color in the entire space. .....you must like something? There is nothing other than SIZE wrong with the rug you have, IF you like it.!! But no, it doesn't work with blue.

You never measured, we've no idea what you want to do with the area in front of the slider..! You want a feeling that is cohesive to both areas. so......? Find a rug you LOVE for the major sitting area, and do you know what size? Other than "bigger"

That was a long response to tell me how awful I am at decorating and to not offer any advice. In the future, I would be less insulted if you just didn't respond, but thanks for your time???? 🤷‍♀️

Here's an update! Rug is still working it's wrinkles out, and we still need some pictures and a tall plant. Not sure how to fill the other space yet. We are thinking a breakfast table but not sure what type or a desk? We also may get a rug for that space. Any suggestions are welcome!

Love the new rug. If you create an eating area, try to find chairs that are in the olive green spectrum. That would be a nice color to add to the open concept area. Is that the color of the throw in the couch? My iPad says it is.

    Some ideas:

Yes RedRyder! That's a great idea! The rug has like a sage green and yes our throws are more on the olive end. Thank you!!

Definitely an eating area. Is it your dining space or is that elsewhere?

I like the rug - and yes that area is for in kitchen dining, where do you all currently eat your meals?

adding some lamps to the sitting area would make a huge difference I think

Also is there space to pull the sectional back even just half a foot more? Then possible pull the recliner a bit more over and toward the tv

There is a separate dining room, and honestly, if we decide on a small eating area it will be just for show lol We could pull the sectional back

If you really don’t need an eating area there I might put two armchairs with a table between them like a nice little reading area or spot where someone can sit and chat with the person coming.

    Cooking not coming!

    A sitting area might work!

Our set-up is similar - an eating area/extended countertop near the kitchen and a separate space, with a dining area. We don’t sit at the countertop to eat - we have a comfortable farm table and chairs with cushions for nearly every meal.
The stools at the countertop are for friends to sit at while I cook so they stay out of the way.

What is missing from your home? I like to have a dining table that isn't all junked up, but I also need a place to do crafts or build a puzzle or play board games or work on some other project, so for me a second small table and 4 chairs would be the answer.

I used to do a lot of painting and it would be a perfect spot to set up an easel and art supplies.

My one friend would have plants - she likes having fresh herbs for cooking and has orchids and other plants.

It would be a good area for built in dog kennels and feeding area if you have dogs. or you could use the space for a bird cage or aquarium/terrarium.

You could set up a cocktail or wine bar or have a bakers rack and your mixer and baking supplies.

It may be a good space for young kids to do homework or work on crafts, use for toy storage and/or a play area.

Make it a drop zone with cabinets and a bench.

One of my friends converted her dining room into a display area for her show and parade saddles and tack.

It really all depends on what you need.

Sorry if there are any repeated ideas - I didn't read through all of the comments. I just decided to add a few ideas.

    Play/craft area for kids:

    Home office area:

    Sitting area:

    Reading area:

You could also turn it into a coffee bar with a little seating area OR a wine area with a little seating area . . .
