How much space is needed for a round table in a corner?

Planning a dining are on a new screened porch and am wondering how far from the walls to place a 48” round table if it will be in a corner location, not squished.

There will only be two walls of course, one of which will be the exterior house wall and one will be the screen. The other two sides will be open to the porch, plenty of space in that direction.

According to my design book, 32" between the edge of the table and the wall is needed for an armless chair and 34" is needed for an arm chair. These values assume that the chairs are placed perpendicular to the respective, adjacent wall and that nobody will be edging or walking behind the chairs.

Where are the DIMENSIONS and drawing of "the new screened porch"?

A "corner" suggests two walls, or you have a step or??

Where are the door passages if any, entrance, steps exit etc?

Post it as a jpeg please. Does it matter? It certainly may, and generally chairs will tuck under and in this setting 30" will often suffice, depending porch size and locations of all ELSE.

The other thing is , how do you use the table most often, how many people most often. If just go sit, pull-up to table, eat, leave all at once the fit can be tighter. If sitting more relaxed, it’s easy for the corner person to be boxed in. Plus, the “ outward-facing “ seating is most desirable, usually.
So 48” diam + 4 Chris takes up a lot of space. 48” table is generous for 4 people - not a bad thing, is good for comfy chairs and dining with a few extra things on table, and especially if you do plan family meals but just give thought to what space you have.
We have a 44” table which is mostly used by just 2, but fits 3-4 for occasional visiting family or close friends, & is just a few steps from kitchen so we serve from there ( or grill which is down a few steps). It’s really bigger than we need for every day and I’m thinking of ways to do something different.

My screened porch is about 12’ x18’ and I think I was surprised at how I filled it up with the things I thought I wanted— some plant shelves for greenery/ flowers, small side tables because I love having a drinks table right there by each reading chair,, no reaching. But am thinking of ways to shrink that.

Marmie, will you please please post a quick floorplan of your porch? We are in the stage of getting estimates and have been handed designs that vary in size from 13x18 to 17x20. I feel like the 17x20 is almost too big, but I am worried that the 13’ width may be too narrow, and would love to see how you live in your 12x18 porch. It’s mostly just two of us and the minimum requirements was for us to be able to eat dinner outside and a small seating area if possible.

The estimates are almost the price of the very first 3br 2ba townhouse I bought!!! So trying to trim the fat a bit.🙃

A round table is the worst possible choice for a corner placement. There is so much wasted space. Get a rectangular table and reclaim that wasted space.

Monique, I have a round table, I am not “choosing” anything. I am not getting another table.

If the 48" round table were in a dining room, the minimum recommended room size would be 11'-6" x 11'-6" according to my design book so the proposed 13' x 18' room would be plenty large.

Just a thought, if the dimensions of a corner banquette worked, it would mean not having to worry about added space needed to pull out the chairs. It will also allow for more people and is a great spot to curl up and read (add a bird feeder) and you’re good!

Think we need to know the measurements of the porch...and what, if any, furniture you will be adding.

What if the table is positioned in the middle of the porch? It and the chairs are center stage. Then what space is left could accommodate other seating?

Thanks everyone! The table needs to be towards the corner due to door placement. And since it’s a screen porch, banquette seating won’t work, but thanks for the suggestion.

And once we decide on size, I will post a floor plan so you can help me buy stuff and decorate!!💃🏻🍾

Sorry I cannot provide an actual floorplan.

We also are using a 44” round table “ because we had it”! It’s actually a pine wooden table with leaf option that we had not for years before moving house, so decided to use temporarily on porch rather than offload or haul to attic. Not weather- proofed as I did not have energy to sand or whatever and apply marine varnish. Top is kept covered by elasticized vinyl tablecloth & then a table throw for dining. Anyhoo.

As a faux- visual, the entrance to porch from house is a one house - wall corner, then immediately perpendicular to that is door to stairs down to deck. So 3 walks of screen in shallow U shape with except for door openings. And a low knee-wall.

I had lived a type of chair with cushions by __ ( Will look up name) that’s vey pricey and takes up space. Plus need ottoman most of sit- enjoy time except for dining.

We get pollen seasons, & general dust- dirt and I can’t deal with storing bulky cushions or cleans them- just the worry also.
Ultimately, for now, we went with zero- gravity chairs which feel great without cushions but can add neck or lumbar. Also they adjust fabulously for drifting off to a short nap amongst breezes and bird calls, without having to have a full- length porch sofa. So interestingly these do require a bit of reclining space , so one especially is in a far corner. But they’re easy to move around, store completely or fold up ‘ cover with a bag , or move to deck. There are many other chair options of course, and we might explore more in the future.

Another thing to consider is your angle of view, if you have anything special beyond . We have some bird feeders that unfortunately can only be in a couple of places , so I can’t see them from every ( seated) spot in porch, so we tend to keep our table near one front screen wall so can see during meals. Thats not necessarily the “ best “ layout from a typical design perspective.

We say that because of this...........The problem or question is part of a whole....and then the problem is solved, the question answered....but this thread will get comments and notifications without all the rest of the information .But the solution is already in place ........

    On the new thread.....right?

    That's why we say that.
