Going to make a visit to High Country Roses

Does anyone want pictures of any of their stock? This is purely a pleasure trip for me since we aren't planning to put in any new roses so I don't have anything I'm looking for. When I've done this in the past I really love looking up other people's picks because it exposes me to new roses I haven't researched myself.

It has been shockingly warm here and instead of alot of dead cane I've got lots of green cane, most still with dead leaves on them.

I looked at Fred Loads and it is green to the tips with alot of little buds. It is zone 4 so maybe, just maybe, this year it will hold on to some cane. I don't hold out alot of hope for the little buds as usually they freeze off when they start so early.

This was Fred Loads last year, June 2024.

I don't have a single photo from last year that isn't over exposed but it is really this brilliant of an orange. This growth is all from a single year since it dies to the ground each year.

I'm excited to see how big it gets if it doesn't die back to the ground. It is a zone 4 so I would love for it to put on growth year over year.

Your trip sounds so fun mmmm12COzone5 I'd rather go to HCR than the Theater or Symphony any day. I hope you get to speak with Matt - if you do , tell him how very much we all appreciate him.

Fred Loads is a flashy guy ! I have the same situation in North Idaho; the baby rose buds are eager to bolt out of sleep and get nipped. The rose canes are far greener this year, last Spring nearly every rose had to start over from ground level.

There is one new rose I'm very curious about, " Audrey Fleurot " AKA " Loves Me Loves Me Not ". That name could be indicative of how it will perform...

    Sheila,

Cosmic Clouds was one that sold out so fast! It is zone 4 so I'm glad you asked for the pics as I had forgotten about it but did want to check it out. Also have Ball Gown Romantica on the list. I'm going to keep an alphabetical list because that is how they are ordered at the green house so they should be easier to find.

    Peachtree,

The old location for High Country Greenhouse used to be by my dentist. I think I surprised Matt one time when I said I would stop by after dental visits to give myself something to look forward to. :-) The new location is closer to my house and I really should stop by more. Your right that it is the perfect relaxation/enjoyment outing. Loves Me Loves Me Not is on the list.

    John,

Baltimore Belle is such an intriguing rose! It says zone 4 and occasional repeat. I looked on HelpMeFind and couldn't find any pics that looked like cold zoners. Wish I could see if it got that big and beautiful in zone 5. Also sometimes the repeat info isn't correct. Any idea if it really does 'occasional' repeat vs more often?

I'm not sure which day I will go. Has to be nice weather and then I call over and see if there is anything going on that I want to avoid like spraying. So until I post the pics I will continue adding to the list for roses people want to see. :-)

I believe Baltimore Belle is mostly a once bloomer. With perhaps a few blooms later in the season in some climates. It's a setigera hybrid so it should be winter hardy, time will tell.

Finally got to High Country Roses. I'll start with the requested pictures.

Cosmic Cloud was very healthy but definitely on the small side. No flowers yet. They did not appear to have a very large batch so I'm not surprised that it sold out so quickly.

They had a much larger group of Ball Gown Romantica.

Only one flower which was getting to the end of it's life. Sorry that the picture is out of focus. I hope they aren't all like this and maybe I had a finger print on my camera lens or something.

But the group of plants looked large and healthy.

I believe the field of them is from the flower on the middle of the left, all the way to where I'm standing and then back to the end of the table in the next aisle.

There actually wasn't much flowering this time. Apparently 2 weeks ago alot more were in flower so I should have either come later or earlier.

Baltimore Belle plants looked really nice! Here is the larger field of them. Alas, no flowers.

Baltimore Belle tag. The light green foliage was really pretty!

There was only one bloom on the Loves Me, Loves Me Not batch and my picture isn't very good.

I didn't think the plants were in great shape and when I commented on them I got the sense they had been sprayed for spider mites. So with this one you may want to take all the leaves off and rinse it in water before planting.

I was admiring Winning Streak, a new for 2025 rose.

Winning Streak starts out with a yellow and red stripe and matures to a pink and white stripe.

Matt popped in for a friendly chat. Here he is holding out one of the younger yellow and red striped Winning Streak roses for me to take a picture of.

For those of you who haven't met him this is Matt, the owner of High Country Roses.

High Country Roses has been in his family since the 1970s.

Later on when I was walking around with Megan she commented that Winning Streak has been blooming constantly since it started blooming. She said alot of roses take a pause in the green house, even if they are continuous bloomers, but not this one. Definitely made me want to give it a try.

    Green house pictures:

    Calico Gal in the foreground.

Overall I thought the plants looked smaller than in previous years. I don't know if they got a late start or if I'm taking pictures earlier than normal. We have had a very mild warm winter compared to normal which I would have thought would be favorable.

I will probably go back in a month or so to try and catch more in bloom.

Thanks for that update! And especially fun to “meet” the owner, Matt. I’ve ordered from High Country Roses several times and have nothing but good to say about their company.

I hope you get to visit again. They reorganized everything this year and now the roses are grouped by type.

Thank you, mmmm! I enjoyed the tour. I do see the cosmic clouds needed time.

Thank you so much for sharing pics!!

I always got the impression that Matt was a delight and his pics seem to match that.

I wish I liked the colors of that winning streak bc it sounds great but it’s a bit vibrant for me .

This spring I have received “ loves light and loves blush ,” from HcR but the breeder is a friend on Instagram and I am so excited to try his. I also purchased some from Duane privately but sadly only one made it . I’ll be sure to post pics when I get blooms.

    I also ordered eglantyne .

They are an excellent resource! I’m glad you are able to visit and share with us :)

Sheila , ball gown is a stunner ( seems tall for me at least ! ) and lmlmn is a very long lasting bloom . I love both !!!
