Design dilemma: garage door style

last month

We're near the end of a whole-house renovation on this 1962 split-level house. The previous owners played up some MCM leanings, and we're keeping that vibe. We've added on a primary suite on the far end and a garage on the end that's (unfortunately) most prominent from the street and driveway. The plans we made with our architect have always called for a modern, full-view garage door with frosted glass, but we're down to the wire on ordering a door and now I'm questioning that choice. On the flip side, I'm not sure I like the look of such a wide expanse of garage door in the other option. I've uploaded mock-ups from the CHI garage door website's visualizer -- colors of the metal parts of the doors have not been decided (the brown shown is a placeholder) but I'm leaning toward a darker color.

Exterior paint and stain begins tomorrow, so these color choices are not changing:

  • Cedar siding will be stained Woodscapes Oxford Brown
  • Fascia will be a brown to match the gutters (gutter company calls it Musket Brown)
  • Horizontal hardie board siding will be S-W Jasper
  • The front door and the trim around the windows will be Benjamin Moore Navajo Red
  • Trim around the windows to the right of the front door will be S-W Underseas

Should we go with the modern, full-glass look or the panels with glass at one end, or something else entirely?
