Difficult Redo of Living Room

last year
last modified: last year

I have an oddly shaped living room with a stairway leading to basement. The dimensions are all over the place with 3 entrance points. I'm needing fresh eyes. My hubby wants light and airy with easy flow of traffic. Basic shape is rectanglular. Fireplace wall is longest at 20 feet. Vaulted ceing 14ft. We don't plan on having a TV in the room. The shortest wall is 7 feet bc of the large opening leading into the kitchen perpendicular to the fireplace. The rug is a 7 x 10. The large coach is 6 feet long and 3 feet deep. Sofa wall 13ft x fireplace wall 20ft. Massage chair wall 7ft. Pet cage basically need has to stay in living room. Our tastes are transitional, French, zen, japandi, hygge. The photos are in the comment. It's true that I probably need a lighter couch or replace the loveseat but i can't afford to replace them. The massage chair is very heavy. The large leather pieces we want to keep but coffee and end tables can be changed. For some reason I can't add comments.

Are you keeping the furniture? None of seems to go with the design looks you posted...knowng more about what you want to keep and what can go would help.

    Keep

As others have learned your best suggestions will come with a detailed floor plan with measurements, doorways, windows and sliders. Will you have a TV in this room?

Nothing says light and airy like a Smart Car sized black massage chair!

Changing coffee and end tables isn't going to change much in the way the room looks and feels.

Maybe add some art to the walls to balance all the dark furniture in the bottom 1/3 of the room.

It looks like a room designed for comfort. I’d leave as is. Maybe down the road you can replace the furniture for a lighter look.

The space has so much potential and I love the high ceilings. However, the heavy and dark furniture is what’s causing the room to feel off. No matter how you rearrange the furniture, the room will not feel right.

Can't say for sure without a floor plan, but it looks like you have the best furniture arrangement for the space. If you can live without the massage chair or move it elsewhere, I'd replace that (with a chair and ottoman, perhaps?). Can the cage get a solid top that could serve as an end table (if a little high)? Heftier lamps, maybe lighter sofa pillows, art that speaks to you on the walls. (I would pair the pineapple art pieces on the wall behind the massage chair, if they stay, and keep all art at seated eye level.) If the wall color stays, maybe a new rug that references that color? Here are a few options:

Taking into consideration you don't seem to have any plans to paint the room, here are illustrations of my suggestions which include:

artwork above the sofa, natural fibre/rattan cordless roman shades on the window and french doors, coordinated accent pillows, new more substantial table lamps, wicker tray decor on the coffee table. I've also relocated the 2 pineapple wood art.

Also showing how an armchair and ottoman would look instead of the very bulky black leather recliner.

"Our tastes are transitional, French, zen, japandi, hygge.".................but at this point that's a bit aspirational: )

Nothing in the seating allows for those ideas.

Maybe wait until you are ready for comfort, minus so much bulk and darkness? Everything you will attempt until then. is going to be drowned out by the heft and bulk.

I don't see any other arrangement for your large furniture. What might visually improve the look is to remove the rug. It's shouting that the room is small and tight. Try it under the dining table.

Speaking of, what about the dining room? Could you switch living to dining?

With the off-set fireplace you could something like this: "arrangement only".
