Sounds drab as all get out to me....but there's no picture of anything, let alone the room, the couch, the recliner so who the heck knows?Nobody: )

Any time you ask about anything we need pictures posted here in a comment . I normally dislike recliners and I sure hope the sofa is not reclining.

Please read the following so Commentors can help you. Without photos we don't know what your room looks like--rugs, floors, adjacent features, wall color, lighting. These affect furniture choices. So many Design Dilemma people used to write in about how to make their big brown or black sofa work in a room, I created an Ideabook of photos that show how to make a big dark piece of furniture work in a room In general, you want contrast or pattern in the new furnishings when one piece like a dark sofa takes up so much light and visual space. Take a look at my Ideabook for examples of how to balance out a dark sofa with new pieces.

Here is how to post a Design Dilemma to get the best results. (Post only one thread on same Dilemma. You can add photos to original thread.) You need to show the whole space—all four sides of an entire space—even if it’s about one specific Dilemma. A layout fix is often a Design Dilemma fix even if it doesn't seem like that. Commenters need to see doorways, windows, closets, finishes throughtout the space to make informed suggestions.

State right at the beginning what the room will be used for and who will use it. State the non-negotiables at the beginning, what has to be kept. Give some idea of the budget. And provide approximate measurements

Keep in mind that you're inviting some design pros and people with a design eye into your home via photos. If they walked into your actual space, they would take in all of it: all four sides, doorways, floors, windows, ceiling, built-in fixtures, lighting, trim--the "givens"--then the features that can be changed--furnishings, paint, art, rugs, decor items, etc. It's all one first impression. Same thing with photos. That's why it's important to provide well lit photos of the entire space, taken from all sides of a room regardless of the size of your problem.

It depends on their shades, as some will work better than others.

Another consideration is that recliners tend to be large and a dark brown couch can feel heavy in a room, so hope the chairs are not bulky. Whether they work in your room depends on the rug, wall color, art and accessories. If you would like feedback, you’ll need to provide more info/pictures.

Need pics; good chance “ No” as so many putty shades skew grayish or just too much contrast with a dark sofa, making things look random.

Maureen gave a great example of one possibility, using both a warmer leather color than many putty shades, AND having dark brown wood trim that links it to brown sofa.
