Lemon or orange scones - tried and true recipes?

last year

Perhaps with dried cranberries?

It's my annual turn to bake for my garden club. Scones are my offering of choice. At this point, the members have already had all my favorites.

I did try a version of a orange scone last year that used frozen cranberries. It was a soggy mess to mix and form, though the results tasted good: so I'd best stay away from fresh or frozen cranberries.

Though I can google recipes, I'd rather have someone's tried and true recipe. Thanks!

You can make your favorite scone recipe orange by substituting juice for the water and adding zest. Most dried cranberries are coated with sugar, so take that into account if you use them. Or dry out a tray of frozen…

Scone recipes do not contain water. Most of mine have buttermilk, which I am pretty sure is an essential ingredient to help them raise.

Sorry. I did mean liquid. You need the acid buttermilk give to activate the baking soda, but fresh orange should work for that. I'm no expert, of course. The buttermilk may also do milky conditioning things to the flour, or the protein may be needed. You could just add a lot of zest.

Linnea, I haven’t made these myself but have had them…very good! I think I’d prefer the dried cranberries more with orange than lemon. They can also be made w/o the glaze.

ETA - You might also check online for Ina’s Lemon Bluberry Scones (I haven’t had them).

My go-to scone recipe is from America’s Test Kitchen for Cream Scones. I’ve made them with variations, including adding some lemon zest (w/o the currants).

Sorry, I haven't yet made these but I love that they are something different and love Zingermans, so have this one saved to try.
