How to get old pet urine stains off of unsealed concrete slab?

Hi, we recently bought a house which needs work including the floors. The previous owners had taken up their flooring at some point and there are old pet urine stains all over the unsealed concrete slab and the house stinks. Can someone please tell me what I can use on unsealed concrete floors that'll get rid of the stains and smell?

There are many products out there that all claim to remove the smell of pet urine - however, many do not work + they can be kind of expensive.

Do you know if it is dog or cat urine? There is a difference - the smell from cat urine is much more difficult to remove. First, cat urine is more concentrated than dog urine - basically, they drink less water than dogs + are able to "hold it" for a longer period of time. Also, cat urine contains uric acid - so, while the smell may seem to be neutralized after using certain products - it tends to be reactivated (= recrystallized) when it's humid = the smell comes back just as strong as it was before.

If it's dog urine, using vinegar is a good option. It can break up the dried urine + then layer a lot of baking soda over the entire area. Let everything dry - the vinegar smell will go away once it's dry and the baking soda will absorb odors.

You can try an enzymatic pet urine cleaner - but in my experience, vinegar + baking soda works better (I had a yorkie that had a litter of three pups - and had to deal with some missed potty pads - vinegar + bs removed the smell after I used stuff to clean the carpet/pad first - I really soaked the carpet w vinegar). I no longer have any carpet in my house - but no dog smell whatsoever when you walked into my home. EVER).

I don't know how well vinegar + bs works on cat urine.

If you are going to lay new flooring (hardwoods/LVP/tile/etc.) - I would then use an oil primer (Kilz or BIN - they have different ones - my understanding is that there is a certain kind that is good for this type of issue - works well on cigarette smells also. I would use 2-3 coats to seal the concrete before installing any new flooring. I believe that the right type of primer will also seal cat urine.

If, the chemicals don't work. Grab a jack hammer and chisel it out and repair the concrete.
