Please help me choose the perfect paint color combo for my house

Our neighborhood HOA has a list of approved exterior paint colors and I’ve narrowed it down to the following combinations. I’d love your input on which one feels the most balanced, timeless, or visually appealing.

  1. Main body: Ethereal Mood (SW7639)
    Trim: Shoji White (SW7042)
    Front Door: Anchors Aweigh (SW9179)
  2. Main body: Jogging Path (SW7638)
    Trim: Shoji White (SW7042)
    Front Door: Anchors Aweigh (SW9179)
  3. Main body: Alpaca (SW7022)
    Trim: Alabaster (SW7008)
    Front Door: Anchors Aweigh (SW9179)
  4. Main body: Foothills (SW7514)
    Trim: Aesthetic White (SW7035)
    Front Door: Anchors Aweigh (SW9179)

I’m open to feedback on any of these pairings—especially how they might look in different lighting or with landscaping. Thanks in advance!

I like Foothills, but I'd do it with Shoji White, as Foothills is very warm and Aesthetic white is a bit cool. Alabaster would work, too. I'd be inclined to do a more interesting color for the door. Gusto Gold, perhaps.

What colors are the homes to your right and left?

You have to have 3 colors?

The five homes to the right of our house are all some variation of beige, as is the house directly across the street from us. I would say the majority of homes in the neighborhood are beige or dark brown. There are a few that are that are grey, sage green, creamy white, and blue (light grey/blue, etc.)

No, we do not have to have three colors, I just thought it would be nice to have the front door be a different color.

Thank you for your suggestions, I truly appreciate them.

You could do an olive. I like SW Artichoke with Daybreak trim.

What state / area do you live in? I’m looking at the foothills behind you. I would want something to contrast with them. The homes around you are browns. Do you like any of the approved greens? What direction does front of your house face? I’d avoid the Anchors Away front door color if it faces north or east - it might look cave like all day with north & in afternoon & evening if facing east.

We are in Boise, ID and the house faces West.

Sigrid, I like the SW Artichoke that is very pretty. However, I am not so sure my husband would like the Daybreak trim as it would be too yellow for him.

KW, yes, I do like green as long as it is not too yellow. As for the Anchors Away front door looking cave like, that makes sense. Our current door is dark brown and it looks cave like all day. I am attaching the approved color list by the HOA, what I am not sure of is how easy it is to get approval for colors not on the list. I am guessing that if the colors are not too far outside of the approved color list they will approve it, but that is just a guess.

One last thing is that the metal frame of our windows are a very dark brown.

Thank you both so much your weighing in on this and helping me, I really appreciate it!

Ok - I’m a close neighbor in SW WA & my home faces West too so I’ve an idea of your exposure. My picks are sticking to your HOA approved list which is challenging bc the house body list is basically shades of beige & gray.

House body & Garage door = Cascade Green SW 0066

Front door = Restrained Gold SW 6129 (this color has a ’wood’ look & will make the front door pop a bit. Would look great with the craftsman style door. If you have a covered patio in back, I suggest painting the ceiling this color too. Amazing what the lighter color ceiling will look like.

Trim = Tricorn Black SW 6258. Consider painting the window trim this black color too.

The gutters stay the same color as trim & downspouts match the body just as you now have them.

Suggest you try the colors on with the SW color visualizer & upload your photo

Thanks KW, I will look into this! As for the back patio, yes we have a covered East facing back patio that looks out over the foothills.

Before moving here we lived in Western Washington (Seattle/Bellevue) area for many years, but I grew up in the Eastern end of the Columbia Gorge so have lived all over Washington State.

Have you driven through the development and looked at all the houses to see if there is a color that you love?

When painting an exterior a little bit of color goes a long way, so looking at a small sample of a gray green may look too gray, but by the time you paint the entire home it is much more green than what you saw when looking at the small sample.

Comparing to a neutral gray is a good way to see how much color there really is in some of these muted shades.

Rare Gray next to neutral gray:

I pulled some of the greens on SW visualizer with Bunglehouse Blue as the door and Shoji White trim. I did not go through all the door colors or whites - just picked something I thought would work with most of the greens.

I like the bluer green of Rare Gray

For me, cascade green and coastal plain are too green - I like something a bit softer/muted:

    Cascade:

    Coastal:

Retreat is too dark for my taste

The next four are all more green/gray/beige (have more yellow than Rare Gray

Chatroom and Gateway are pretty similar with Chatroom being slightly grayer/less colorful than Gateway. Chatroom may feel too gray, but you have to look at samples to see how it feels in your location.

    Chatroom

    Gateway:

Jogging Path is a lighter version of Gateway gray

To me Svelte Sage is getting too green beige for my taste, but you are the one who has to love the end result

    Side by Side comparisons;

Jennifer, thank you for all of that, it really helps. I will say that i do walk the neighborhood multiple times a day with our dog and the houses that I like the best are painted lighter colors. The first two colors that I had our painter test out on the house were Creamy SW7012 for the main body, Superior Bronze SW6152 for the trim, and for the front door, Naval SW6244. My husband and I thought the Creamy was blinding white.

I did as you did and plugged in come colors into the Color Visualizer and one of the ones I like best is Jogging Path. I will continue to play around with the Color Visualizer.

    Thank you again!
