The Read House hotel in Chattanooga TN

last year
last modified: last year

We are here for a few days with DD, SIL and grandboys to visit the children’s museum, ride the train and go to the aquarium. I haven‘t been here since we were touring boarding schools in the area for DS2. It’s changed a lot since then! The beautiful downtown hotel where we are staying has been renovated and the lobby area is very grand

Seating area in soothing tones of green and taupe

Game tables in a large alcove

Victrola and old books

Not appreciating the finer points of interior design, the boys vote is for this as their favorite room

After dinner we had a good hour in the pool that served as a child-friendly sleep aid. I finally became the Grandma who wears a turban in the swimming pool 😳

Not me but the turban is similar.

Anxious to see the museum tomorrow, the pictures and reviews could not be any better. The kids are big fans of the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta; in fact they are members and visit almost monthly, so they are excited to see a different one. Loving spending time with these little guys!

Wow! So beautiful! I’ll try to remember this if I’m ever there. It reminds me a little of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel In Seattle. Sounds like a fun trip!

So pretty! DD2 and family spent a weekend there, spending half a day at the children's museum before driving home that day. She said they could have spent an entire day there, even with the children's 8yr age difference.

The hotel is beautiful. I will keep it in mind if I ever find myself in Chattanooga. I love the look of turbans and wear them occasionally. I'm sure you looked stunning.

That hotel is gorgeous. I haven’t been to Chattanooga since the eighties when I went to meet with clients who were based there. I am sure it has changed since then. Enjoy your trip!

What a lovely hotel. I’m with the boys — that would be my favorite room, too. :)

A gorgeous hotel. We go to Chatranooga every few years just for a close getaway. Will keep this hotel in mind.

So pretty. As you know, I love a cool hotel. We recently stayed at the Perry Lane in Savannah. Next to the elevators was this mural and two strange figures, who I came to adore over the few days we were there.

The best part was that someone (I assume staff) moved them periodically.

On our last day, there was just one, and I kind of worried about the missing little guy.

Of course I googled them. At least the shipping cost is reasonable. 😂

    Sorry to hijack, k!

Gorgeous hotel! How nice that there was a pool for the kids . Maybe someday you can bring them to the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

What a beautiful hotel! And the turban - very Gloria Swanson :). I'm sure you looked like an uber chic grandma!

Don’t forget to stop by Clumpies for ice cream. And see the alley of umbrellas (I think I liked seeing it more than my grandchildren!) The children’s museum is a great hands-on experience for them, but I can’t recommend the food.

Unfortunate development…. after breakfast this morning— a half of a biscuit from the Innside Restaurant a block from the hotel— I had a massive gallbladder attack and am still in bed from it. Coincidently, SIL felt bad this am and had a temp of 101.9 ! DD and her dad did the activities alone while SIL and I suffered in our respective suites ☹️ At one point I vomited on and off for three hours. My surgery is scheduled for April 3rd and it can’t come soon enough! I am feeling better but we are still leaving tomorrow morning; in case I have another episode we want to be in the same state as my doctor. SIL is feeling better and can participate in tomorrow’s outings.

Today they went to the Children’s Discovery Center and the Aquarium and swam again before dinner. They’re out now getting ice cream. As they departed I heard the four year old announce that he was taking the bus!

adding, SueB those figures are just weird enough to be cute! I imagine the staff have fun moving them about. They look heavy (and the shipping cost bears that out!) …hope they are at least too heavy to sneak out of the hotel.

Oh Kswl - I am ao sorry to hear this. I hope everything settles between now and April 3rd. I had my gallbladder out when it was annoying and irritating but not so severe as what you are experiencing. Easy enough surgery and recovery. I am thinking about you and fingers crossed you have an uneventful surgery and quick recovery. Take care of yourself!

PS - You have no more weight to lose so knock if off!! xo

Thank you Ruby!— and I have not been actively trying to lose weight for more than a year and a half. Between the thyroid medication (which I am taking in the lowest dose possible that will keep those T levels in the green zone ) and more activity I’ve just ….lost 🤷‍♀️ I have an appt with the endocrinologist in April; she is a big believer that when all things are in alignment the body finds its own ”correct” weight. My BMI is fine, and I probably look thinner than I actually am, but I am looking forward to her opinion and recommendations.

Oh, @Kswl, that really stinks. I hope you are feeling better and that you can stay that way until April 3rd!! And SIL too!

The kids have had a wonderful time already, so the trip wasn’t a bust. DD and SIL had planned a nice dinner out together tonight which obviously didn’t happen, but they’ll have it soon.

So sorry about the ill-timed attack, kswl. I know you were looking forward to a fun day with the grands and after Apr 3 I’m sure there will be many more.

I am feeling better this morning and we’re packing up. Hopefully this will end uneventfully and speedily April 3. I have read many times that people start developing various problems in their seventies that pop up like whack a moles.…. mine seemed to have started early. The weird thing is that, overall, I consider myself pretty healthy, if not very healthy.🤔 Maybe this is just like the times when your house gets a certain age and requires different sysyems replacements and upgrades 😎

Glad you're feeling better, but sorry this happened and you weren't able to fully participate with the grands. I know how wonderful it is to be involved in their activities. And how stinky it is when you plan it and then cannot. I got Covid on our yearly family trip to Cape Cod last summer and it was terrible (for me). They all still had a wonderful time which did make me happy.

What a beautiful hotel! And I can understand the grands' favorite room. And as indoor hotel pools go, that one is pretty darn nice! Having a son who played youth travel baseball, I know about indoor hotel pools and we never had one that nice!

Come on, April 3rd, hurry up and get here!

Thank you for sharing that Tina, I have no stones but an ”area of concern” that warrants removal— plus the awful symptoms, of course. DH said if I have another terrible attack we will contact the dr to move the surgery forward. However I have to hold one of my prescriptions for a certain number of days before surgery as there is increased risk of bleeding. I have a history of bleeding during surgery (including one very frightening episode of DIC for which my entire blood volume was replaced) and they would only do emergency surgery if the gallbladder was about to blow. I am going to be eating Carr’s table water crackers until the 2nd

Love that quote RC! I’ll have to remember it. Just yesterday, I said to my daughter who was complaining about something hurting, ”After 40, it is just patch, patch, patch!” (anyone know who to attribute that to?)

I have often quoted the writer Harry Crews who once said, "I turned 70 and started to come apart like a cheap toy." It was funnier when I was 40-something.

I’m going to have to remember that!

Well, while Harry Crews was also a gym/weight lifting guy, he also drank like a lunatic so certainly his lifestyle didn't help. And after I wrote that I decided I should look it up and it was in an article about him turning 70 but the accurate quote is "I turned 69..."

Not a huge difference but still.

I am so sorry your not feeling well...just hang in there until you can get home. Glad the kiddos had a good time and you got to be there with them. Carr's table water crackers and cheese? No cheese? Darn Kswl! You'll have to plan a feast after your surgery. You also have Golf to look forward to. Spring is here! ⛳ Feel better soon.
