1961 Brick Bungalow needs curb appeal

I purchased this home 9 months ago and have been working on the interior to modernize and make it my own. I’ve also redone the garage. I really do not like the color of the brick, or the color of the window and door trim. The windows all need replacing, and the front step is slanted and the sidewalk is cracked. In addition, the soffits for the roof are unusually wide and lie, so I cannot install a front storm/screen door!

I’m overwhelmed trying to decide what to tackle first. I really want to change the color of the brick and trim, but I’m worried about doing the exterior before I dive into the expense of window replacement.

The house is only 1000 sq feet (there is a basement though) but I’m considering adding a large bay window to the front to give me more space for plants etc.

Literally ANY suggestions on color, landscaping, how to fix soffits, etc., are greatly appreciated.

This isn't your brick, but it could be your modern palette. --orange or blue door to hightlight entry. Embrace the brick, but upgrade your landscaping and hardscaping.

I hope you won't paint or add a bay window unless it's on the side. Embrace the house you bought, which has great lines, color, and texture. Plus painted brick will add more upkeep in a short time. Landscaping could do wonders for your house.

It looks like the roof has a red undertone and the brick, yellow. I have a general reluctance to recommend painting brick because then you've made a no maintenance surface require maintenance, but painting it is the only way aside from replacing the roof to fix the clash. The eaves are deep to keep the sun from baking the house at certain angles. Of course it's also part of the style. It's not something you need to change, and you can't change it without a lot of trouble and expense.

I think bronze windows and SW Urbane Bronze look good with this color brick. UB is more interesting than the flat brown you currently have. You could also use a lighter color, but I'm not sure about white. How do you think the white garage looks with the house? You should definitely be thinking about the color of new windows before changing anything else on the exterior. If the roof is relatively new you have to take it into consideration as well.

IMO no bay window , the soffit keeps the sun out of the house in the summer but of course depends which way the house faces. That huge hedge thing needs to go the brick is IMO the best part so leave it alone and work with it. You say the inside is now more modern so why not do thta on the exterior a bit more MCM could work new front door and the windows large with no grids or simple like housegal suggested I live this for landscaping on a MCM type house

I’m a bit confused as to which is your home. Attached or detached garage picture?

You can get estimates for the two front window replacements and for a new porch with sidewalk. Then you can see what fits your current budget.

I'd move the big shrubs hiding your house. I tend to transplant plants, particularly if they are big and pretty. I'm not sure your yew? is it? counts.

I like the brick, but think the colors of your house aren't great. With a better door color and some lights in the windows, I think it would be much prettier.

I suggest you resist the urge to add a bay window. I see quite a few houses around here where someone added a bay window and most of the time they just look a little odd compared to the rest of the house. And they're expensive too. You could put that money into more important things, like new windows, concrete work, and landscaping.

Love @celery's landscaping visualization. Talk about curb appeal! That's the way to go.
