Ideas for furniture for an 11x19 living room with multiple entrances

last month
last modified: last month

Hi, Any ideas on what kind of furniture I should put in this living room? I don't know how to begin, what type of furniture to put in, or how to arrange it. This is a living room to receive people to talk. No TV. To accommodate at least six people, maybe 8, comfortable.

Use a rug to define a seating area in the far end of the room. Have two sofas placed in an L and two chairs.

What other needs do you have to fill the upper space in the room? A large entry table, bookshelves and a reading area? A nice long console against the wall with artwork above? Table and chairs for hanging out on laptops or playing games?

I'd like a wider space. And I'd investigate the small wall in the center of the entrance area.

May we have some pictures of the room? That will help a lot.

The wall in the middle is probably bearing a load.....

The opening at back side probably goes to a kitchen, or hall as shows no door

Formality / receiving guests/ no tv"/ can be a very culturally related issue.

I would not do a sectional, as bird on a wire seating is not very conversation oriented and often, an older guest finds a chair w 2 arms, EVEN one dragged in from a dining room, to be more supportive and comfortable.

I think the room is not a bad size and like Jan's layout for a nice feeling and looking space I think no point in reating another space with no purpose in that room .It is nicely proportioned and easily handles that layout with lots of spaces to add a chair or 2 if needed .

These renditions are presented for your consideration. In them you see:

    • This arrangement will seat up to eight people.
    • One Three seater couch (can be the one you already have. )
    • Two two seater couches.
    • One matching chair
    • One large area rug
    • Three round side tables. Two with table lamps on them on either side of the three seater couch.
    • One large oval coffee table.
    • One console table under the window with two table lamps and a fun accent piece (coral).
    • Curtains
    • Two potted plants on either side of the console table where they will get a lot of light from the windows.
    • One large cabinet for storage, books, games, etc.
    • Artwork on the walls.

Hope this helps. Best Wishes. MAE

Well. You have to wonder who did the the "dumb" openings. Doesn't change the best furniture arrangement in the living room, 11' is yet more challenging than 12' in width no matter the generous length........

BUT...... did anyone need a view of the garage door? Did anyone need to cut though the living room to anywhere? No....

If I had extra tile, or was planning a flooring change? I'd be closing/opening. Leaving adequate entrance from foyer, and obliterating view of garage door.

Second to paint and kitchens, the MOST frequent questions here are "what fits in this room?......what do I buy?"

We ask for a measure, for pictures.....so that we can help. But it is all about inches, and that shall include what is commonly available, and common in size for comfort!

This ( below ) has a tropical, patio/outdoor feel, and would translate to apartment sizing. For size and bulk alone? Nothing you have right now really works , particularly the sofa which is probably nearly 42 inches in depth, and is heavy looking.

    Real space/fit/inches/ passages/everything

You would find this type ( short sofa, etc, shallower depths , in apt size seating, or yes, in outdoor seating.

The extra chair feels tight in the space and would block a logical /" suggested" movement to the dining room. Fine to yank in something from dining room when needed, but better with nothing of permanence in that spot.

Versatility is important too, and rare is the instance a room would beg three sofas, in any size, for that reason alone.

So....you ask yourself , what fits for what I need, what is the look and feel I want, and how will the things I want....feel!!In the space. Plan first, buy second.

I flat out envy the rendering ability we see here and my skill is zero in that regard: ) But a scale ruler, pencil and paper low tech, and the available feet and inches have never once failed me. They won't fail you, either: )

The color rendering is pretty but looks to me like seating for five people and is a traffic jam at that.

You will need to purchase furniture with slender lines that is not as deep, not as bulky.

Does this make any sense? Is it too bulky? I just kind of saw something and kind of try to mesure the sectional and fit it in the blueprint

Least versatile ( therefore costly and limiting) configuration one can imagine. Most sectionals eventually will turn out to be just that.

Do as you wish, don't whine later : )

The 2 people on your sofa sitting in the spots marked #1 will be knocking knees

The sectional divisions are not to scale. Only the overall size
Also there is a gap not shown between the two 1 seats in my bad drawing ;-)

I was trying to draw this

This is one suggestion my wife made, but so far, none of us are really convinced by any of the ideas we’ve come up with. That’s why we turned to this forum, to see if we could visualize better ideas for how to use that formal living room space.

You have it, based on three decades experience......you have others. But keep asking until you get the answer you want.

Get some graph paper, 1/4 inch to foot. Note the exact size of all you might like. Read up on comfortable passages and clearances....for guests to move about. You have it here.

In that way. 1/4 inch your dimensions exactly.

Sectionals are casual family use lounging furniture. Pets too. For those uses they are infinitely more usable than chairs and sofas because of the many informal configurations you can relax in. And a big ottoman can be used for lounging and as a table to hold refreshments. If you have good friends, they can hang out here also. Music, laptops, phones reading, the list goes on. All with snacking or informal meals.

Tell the guests to wear their pajamas and fuzzy socks, bring a little blanket.

I can't say enough, how tired I am of this sprawl in the basement w /tv/ look, in every room in which it does NOT belong..

Good luck with the mess from the drinks and popcorn or a cocktail table on which to place them........LOL

Not to mention a lot of obesity can be explained : )
