Can you help me identify these two roses?

last year

The white one never shows its pistils and stamens. The blooms sometimes have a shade of green in it but it's pretty much a pale yellow white rose. The rose does not fall off once it's dead and never produces hips.
The red rose starts red then turns magenta and fades away until it's light pink.

Does the White one have a strong fragrance? Could it be Pope John Paul II?

  • last year

Is your red/purple rose a once bloomer? Could it be a Gallica? Diane

  • last year

jj thanks for replying, it has a mild fragrance so I don't think is John Paul.

Diane I think its a Gallica too but now the question is which one =)

  • last year

Well, it doesn't quite fit Cardinal de Richelieu, but it's close because of the small size of the bloom. The Cardinal seems a looser bloom and opens very widely. The other Gallica purplish I was thinking of has huge blooms. Diane

  • last year

It most closely fits Orpheline de Juliet. Diane

  • last year

Diane that might be it! The leaves look a lot like it. Do you have this rose?

  • last year

No, I don't, but I've been interested in Gallicas for a long time, and I've enjoyed researching stuff since my college days. That rose's name means Orphan of July. I think it's a found rose. I'd have to recheck that. Have you tried posting on the Antique Rose Forum where the experts are? PortlandMysteryRose loves the Gallicas, but she posts infrequently. Diane

How about contacting Roseseek (Kim) and see what he thinks? Diane

  • last year

Diane I should. I just need to get another picture of it when it's in its last stage.

It took 3-4 years to bloom and now it has a bunch of buds. The other half is arching the other way.

Since these are clearly newer roses growing in pots, I'm assuming that they are roses you ordered and lost track of what they are. Do you have any recollection of what they are supposed to be, or what roses you ordered around the time you got them? That info would help even if they are mislabeled. I do remember a recent thread of yours about the red one in which you couldn't remember where it came from.

  • last year

The red one Susan was supposed to be Oshun! How I waited for that rose 😹 to bloom peachy and never did🙈. And the other was a grocery store throw away plant.

Thanks Sheila for the lovely photo. Do most gallicas have the same looking leaves.

Diane I love the name. Sometimes I feel like an orphan and I was born in July.

  • last year

Socal, I would say the leaves have a mostly gallica look but are not identical. Suzy Verrier wrote a great book on Gallicas and there are wonderful photos and descriptions. Real experts, some on this forum, could probably identify a gallica variety by the leaves but I am not that person.

Ok I'll have to look that up. Thanks for that info. Loving how many petals it has. I need to read up on them and learn why they only bloom once.

I wonder if there were any way to contact portlandmysteryrose through Houzz messaging. She might help you really nail the ID down. I also read that in France, the July orphans (caused by the Revolution, I guess) were to receive a free education from the government. I'm sure there are more interesting details to this story. Loving learning some rose history tidbits. I hope they did receive a free education.

I just recently discovered that near me they have a rose auction. https://www.ccrsauction.com/about.php

For older or unusual roses. I'm trying to get a hold of them but their website has no contact form. Maybe on a desktop they do, and I just can't see it. I bet these people know a lot about roses too. Have any of you participated in a rose auction before?

Thanks a bunch! On their site the insta page was not opening for me. Yay this makes me so happy. I want one of the roses they have listed.

  • last year

You are welcome! Two or three years ago I won a Huntington pink ice rose at the auction and was able to pick it up at the home of one of the organizers. His garden was being built and it was looking to be spectacular!! I wish I could remember his name . But anyway .. it was a very easy process and I was so thrilled to get that rose . Good luck to you!

One other possibility, a long shot, would be Nuits de Young. Google rose plant Nuits de Young, and check the photos and info on the National Gardening Association database. They have the best photos and info. Diane

That's not a gallica. It's probably an Austin.

Shiny, modern leaves. This is more what gallica leaves look like.

This is Jenny Duval. See how matte the leaves are?

Jen I messaged them yesterday. I hope they get back to me before the auction starts. Wow how cool you got your plant and got to see his house. I bet it was full of rose treasures.

Diane mine does not look purple at all but it could be my weather since I'm hotter.

Mad_gallica, really? I have no experience with gallicas. It took 3-4 years to bloom and the leaves look different than my Austin roses. It's arching left and right. Do gallicas ever bloom more than once? Right now it looks so pretty I hope it's not a gallica in a way since I have very little real estate for a once bloomer.

  • last year

By definition, gallicas are once bloomers. They also *require* a winter dormancy. I think it unlikely you could keep one going in zone 10 for years without special treatment.

  • last year

Aww then I should give it away if it is one. So one bloomed last month by itself and now it has 6 buds on it so does that mean it's not a gallica?

  • last year

How it looks today. Mad_gallica it is starting to look like an Austin rose 🤔

  • last year

The leaves don't lie. The breeders might, but the leaves never do.

If you can remember where it came from, poke around their list for an Austin that begins with an O, or maybe a P. A lot of smaller nurseries sort their roses alphabetically, and it's relatively easy for a rose to get mixed up with the one ahead or behind.

Rvr has Wise Portia but to me it looks more like Othello. Maybe she used to have Othello. Thanks for all your help.

@mad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY) That's how I've identified several mislabeled roses over the years. Over 20 years ago, I was at Vintage's store and found a Mount Shasta with the row label in the pot, but not its own label. When I brought it up to check out, Gregg said "I'd be very hesitant that it's Mount Shasta". I decided to roll the dice, and it turned out to be Monet, which ended up being a much better purchase (and I still have it). Anyway, the alpha thing for mislabeled roses is a really good idea.

mad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)You truly are a leaf wizard. When my mystery rose arrives I wonder if you could somehow identify its type.
