ID for this dried seed head and zillions of black seeds?

This is a dried flower seed head with many tiny black seeds, collected late summer 2024. I am in Zone 5a New England.

I got busy and did not label them or it's lost. One of the photos shows what I believe is another red or pink flowered plant (petunia?)

They may have been fron either annuals or perennials in pots.

Any guesses? Thanks.

I will label this plant A

I believe ”B” is another/different plant.

Foxglove was my first thought too. Looks very much like it.

The flowers point up, not hang down or point down. My first thought was the Mallow family...do you know what color the flower was? Yellow....maybe?

ETA The amount of experience and talent on these forums is always such a joy to encounter.

I believe the dried flower head and seed pods and rectangular seeds do belong to Foxglove— Digitalis purpurea.

I had one in a pot and had to buy it because I because I was running low. Here are two other images I took that show the box-shaped rectangular seeds.

I guess I can sow these now. I have a bizillion!

A. is definitely Foxglove. B. too imo. Did you have one of the open faced Digitalis purpurea?

Foxglove is an annual at 7600'....I don't grow annuals....enjoy!

Thanks, everyone. That’s an interesting seedling site, floral_uk. I looked around for 10 - 15 minutes late last night, but didn’t spot my seedlings. I will try to include a scale next time I snap pix. Excellent point.

What do you mean by ”open faced Digitalis purpurea?“ I am not familiar with that term but I’m thinking that it refers to foxglove blloms where the opening faces up to the horizontal instead of being tilted downward. ? Easier to spot the flower spider that way and very beautiful, if that’s what you mean. The gardenpath site showed a variety where the bloom openings were more on the horizontal (plane of opening perpendicular to the ground).

Thanks, floral_uk. I looked around at the Kew garden site, then ither that or some other site showed a collection of mutated foxgloves with unusual flowers like the one you linked to.

I used to have many foxgloves here and there. There was a raft of young foxglove plants upslope in a perfect setting but close to our little road and corner with the neighbor. I looked out to see that neighbor or my DH taking a string trimmer to the not-yet-flowering raft of foxgloves. I couldn’t rescue them in time. They would have been so lovely in that spot. I will put some of the collected seeds there, and will only hope that (even after a reminder) they don’t meet the same fate.

If those guys really want to tidy up, there are plenty of other areas that need their attention. — but not as much fun. Some guys can turn into little boys who like throwing stones into ponds, stomping on dandelions, and so on. 🧬
