Thoughts on landscaping/patio extension

I would love your thoughts on possible affordable (aka DIY) ways to extend the patio. We plan to put in raised garden beds (cedar) and would like ideas that incorporate those. I would like to have a firepit back here as well. Thank you!

The logical thing to do would be to extend it straight out from the last pic and use an awning or other shade if you need the shade.

Hi I would suggest using pea gravel to extend off the covered patio and with a curved design that would also encompass the set of three windows. I don't love the border on this but you get the idea. Just google extend covered patio with pea gravel and you'll find lots of inspiration. Good luck!

Thanks, Ellen. I really like this look (minus the border).

you've got a nice property to develop, here are a couple before and afters that are similar to your space...

Nice grassy area, but it belongs, in part, to your neighbor. Same to the other side. Using some of your space would need some kind of privacy landscaping or fencing. What happens when your neighbors want to use their yards? Challenging. This sub development was designed for house spacing with the outdoor activity location you have to make that spacing work. I see your tree and screening bushes at the very rear. That could be the beginnings of the privacy landscaping you'd nead.

No worries - we're only looking to extend our patio in our yard, not doing anything to the neighbors' yards. And not looking for privacy, just more patio space.

My thought is tied to the future expansion of the neighbors on both sides of you expanding their patios into their spaces. Would you and they be OK with that setup?

What do you plan to do on the patio that can’t be done on the lawn? Pea gravel is great if everyone removes shoes before entering the house.

I have no clue how the neighbors are involved but Lyn's inspiration pic is alogical way yo extnd and stay in your property . I happen to not like grass so a bigger patio makes perfct sense to me Add acouple of umbrellas to the part not covered and enjoy the days of summer .I have no idea whay adding pea gravel is a good idea either . A nice large outdoor entertaining space is a great addition to any home I have 2200 sq ft of deck we live out there in the summer . I assume there is an HOA involved so better make sure whatever you plan meets the RULES . The grass to me does not look great so less of it and more of useful space would be my choice . It look s like you have a large property so a seperate fire pit area would be nice .

The paver extension above would be a good choice. Look on FB Marketplace for free or cheap sources. If you're willing to remove them you can get them for free. Another option in my area is a unadvertised unless you ask one day sale on pavers for later pickup during the season. Aimed at landscape contractors with planned jobs to lock in product. It's a Saturday in May.

Costco brings arborvitae for $39 every spring. Plant some on your lot lines for 10 feet or so to start giving you future screening.
