I got unmugged, now what?

Unbowled, too. I gave away six offee mugs and five matching bowls that I rarely used. I have other bowls but my remaining coffee mugs are a rather ragtag bunch, although I have my favorites.

When you serve coffee or tea to a small group, say four, do you use all matching mugs or cups? The whole point of getting rid of the mugs and bowls was to make more room in the cupboard, but now Im thinking of getting a matching set of four mugs.

If you have a favorite mug, please show me. Here are my two faves.. I have two of the blue ones. I like pottery mugs. Lets see yours. Do you like one soecific shape over others?

Plain white at our house, too. I do have matching sets of these 6 designs. I often use the ones in the second pic for soups.

I cannot have mismatched mugs, mugs that say Best Grandma Ever!, commemorative mugs from Princess Diana’s wedding, or freebies given out at retreats, seminars, or with company logos. I like stuff to match, and I think it is part of my genome. To that end we have for casual dining:

16 creamy white mugs (everyday dishware)

12 small red marimekko mugs with white polka dots

12 of these (bottom left) from Williams Sonoma that go with the heart appetizer plates:

And 12 of these from Royal Doulton that comprise two of each pattern in their Pacific range:

These are the closest I will get to mismatched mugs….and it was a HUGE stretch for me to get two sets of these instead of 12 in the back left pattern which is my favorite. I chose these because people can remember which cup of coffee is theirs!

The bottom shelf are for daily…when Im not using my keep-warm thermos. Second shelf when I need four ..rarely, purchased in the 70’s ? I was surprised to see them in a ’90’s, movie, Grand Canyon. Row three holds my baby mug, and a bit from my mom’s spode. I figure useful can be pretty, too, AND/ or sentimental. The amber glasses are a dupe of my sweet Gran’s.

I got this cup from my niece and I loved it. It holds about 16 oz. I looked online and got 5 more to go with it. Five are different birds and one is a butterfly. They are all different colors. I got another butterfly and gave it to my friend for her birthday. It's her favorite mug now too.

For guests, I use mugs that match or coordinate with whatever dishware I'm using. For daily use, I have two mugs from Home Goods and two Christmas mugs, both of which were acquired just this year as I don't drink coffee or tea, but enjoyed drinking hot water, broth and an occasional instant mocha this winter.

Love the Starbucks tradition, SueB. Did you buy one in Austin?

I have a thing for white mugs, white dishes. The simpler the better. Also, like Sueb, a few Starbucks mugs, maybe 6. I haven't traveled much to get any more. A few white mug are from Target - great for coffee. All of your varied collections are really pretty and I'm admiring all of them!

We have some nice china mugs for guests, all the same body shape but differently decorated so that everyone knows whose is whose. Our everyday mugs are different, the cup I use at our main residence is a giant teacup with a section of a Monet painting decorating it, and DH's is red with a "Danger High Voltage" sign on it. At our city unit my mug is a purple Disney spooky themed mug, and DH's is a gift from DD after our grandson was born- it says something like "Oji because Grandpa is for old guys" :-). When our book club used to meet in each other's homes, I collected vintage china tea cup, saucer and plate sets from places we travelled to, so again, they're similar but different so no mixing them up.

I'm not keen on pottery mugs, preferring the feel on my mouth of thin china.

Years ago, a friend told me about a couple they were once friendly with, and who visited often. My friend would offer the couple a cup of tea, which the wife would refuse and the husband would accept. But the wife would take sips out of her husband's mug, which my friend thought odd, and would again offer her her own mug of tea, which would be refused. Then one day, she overheard the wife whisper to her husband, "I wish she would serve the tea in cups instead of mugs," which floored my friend. She said, "Why didn't you just say something, I have dozens of cups but I use mugs because they are bigger!" and after that she gave the wife her tea in a cup.

My favorite mug is a riff on the old British saying -- "Keep Calm and Carry on" which my sister gave to me (I'm an Anglophile par excellence). It says "Now Panic and Freak Out". So suitable for how my life is going, lol.

MurraysMom....I have one of those Crouser mugs! It's the owl, and beautiful.

I bought it several months ago for the neighbor across the street who I don't know well. She's not a gardening person and works full time, but her husband is outside and visits a lot. She leaves so early in the morning she often sees our neighborhood owl and makes sure husband mentions it - we hear it at night but rarely see it. I was going to put short bouquet of winter flowers in it and send it over to her. Now its Spring and you've just reminded me to do something with spring flowers this week, have DH walk it over!

We have mugs from all the colleges and grad schools our kids and now grandkids have attended—17 and counting! Yes, we use them.

Also, when i got my first job in 1966 i bought a set of eight white mugs with matching teapot, coffee pot, creamer and sugar bowl. We always use them with guests and they remain in pristine condition.

If we're having a nice dinner then I use the Lenox French Perle mugs that match the place settings. If it's a really special dinner then I set the table with the Lenox Autumn china and the Autumn cups and saucers.

For a casual get-together with close friends or family then I open the server that is on an angled wall between the DR and Kitchen and use it as a beverage center with various mugs, sugar, creamer, coffee or tea pot maybe even the 3 tier dessert stand and dessert plates.

DH and I each have our favorite mugs - well I have 2 favorites for coffee but for tea I prefer porcelain. DH uses the same diner type mug for everything.

I have cups to match both sets of china and the Corelle. As well as the camping stuff. No one ever uses them. I like what I call regular 11oz mugs. I do need a new one, for most times, because the one I like is so faded, it cannot be read. I only drink coffee in the morning and never tea, unless it is Lemon Zinger in the winter.

Most of these were gifts, except the Santiago one up at the top, the multi colored one next to it, the yellow and blue one hiding on bottom shelf, and the white swirly Mikasa ones, which are my least favorite. Two are from exchange students I've had, One is from one of my Japanese cousins, three are from friends, one from my daughter, three from my son. My favorite right now is the mushroom one, which was a Christmas gift last year from a friend.

I have taken some to a local thrift store and this doesn't include some I got over in Germany that are being used as pen holders or just decorative things on my shrunk. I have two under the sink too, that I use to sprout things in or make a mixture of BT to inject into my squash plants.

I recently gave some advice to a young coworker just moving into his own place. I told him not to buy himself mugs. Or more than one or two. Because people will give him SO MANY mugs as gifts over the years there is no need to buy your own. Most of mine were given to me, all of them are either pink or holiday themed, except one green one. Its a Capricorn themed mug, from my astrology loving friend, who says she has never met such a "Capricorny Capricorn" in her life. Not sure if that was a compliment or a dig, :)

I do not really use mugs a lot. Other than Hot cocoa, which is an extremely rare indulgence, I do not care for hot drinks, and my SO who has only 2 mugs, a Leo mug and a Snoop Dogg one, prefers a travel mug for his one cup of coffee a day in the colder months. I do use them to melt butter and heat syrup in the microwave.

I do not have a picture right now, but I would say my favorite mug, which I never use because I do not want to mess it up, is a pink one, kind of oddly shaped, with a picture of Cindy-Lou-who on it. It is my favorite because it was a gift from my late, former boss, who was a saint on Earth, and a perfect mix of things I love, pink and holidays.

I do not like how dinnerware sets always come with mugs. I feel like is universally recognized that most people have a ton of mugs. I suppose people who like everything to match appreciate such things, but it kind if irritates me. That's one reason I almost never buy a dinnerware set, but individual pieces if possible.

Am I the only one that drinks their coffee out of a Yeti mug like this? I like that it keeps it hot for as long as it takes me to drink. When we go to Cape Cod for a week in the summer, I take it with me because I always miss it when I'm not home.

For guests, we have a bunch of different mugs from plain white to some pretty pottery ones. When we serve coffee/tea/dessert, it's always very informal. Even at Thanksgiving. People hardly ever eat it at the dinner table. Usually taken into family or living room. So it's not so important to me that everyone's match.

I'm like kswl. No mugs with sayings. My sister in law would often give me mugs with sayings because she thought they were funny. They usually get thrown away as soon as I get home. She and my brother would also often give us framed sayings because they thought they were funny. Same thing, say thank you, get home and toss. I used to keep them all in the basement but I finally decided that I don't need to have anything in my home I don't like, even if given to me by a relative.

jsk - I have a question about your Yeti mug - does it have a silicone or rubber gasket ring around the inside of the lid to help seal in the liquid?

The corkcicles have a silicone ring and they just don't hold up well. They're easy to remove but difficult to put back on correctly. Plus they get tiny pinholes that become stained and cannot be cleaned. They don't sell replacement gaskets either - but you can order an entire new lid.

I have 2 Corkcicle mugs that are similar to the Yeti. I use my regular favorite mugs for my coffee or hot tea during the day but at night I use my Corkcicle like a sippy cup. I insert a straw and then when I wake up at night with a dry mouth I can easily pick up the mug from the nightstand and take a sip of water or tea without spilling it all over my pillow.

maire - I just looked. It does have a black rubber ring on the lid. I've had this one for a couple years and it hasn't deteriorated or discolored in any way.

This is my second one. The first one was white and the enamel on the outside was starting to chip, so I got this pink one to replace it.

For my water during the day and at night, I use Brumate cups. I also have to have a cup of water on my nightstand which I often sip from during the night.

Jsk, I have that Yeti mug, but it does not keep my drinks warm. I guess you have to use the lid for that? I don’t use the lid.

Yes, I always use the lid. Keeps it hot/warm for a long time.

I have a set of 12 of these coffee/tea cups to go with my dinner dishes. No one but me likes using them. I can see now that they are ergonomically challenged. But they are not going anywhere!
