Need ideas to create more of a French country look in my kitchen.

last year

I would like to brighten up our kitchen and possibly change the backsplash. We would like to keep the black granite countertops and cherry cabinets and flooring.

Transitional to country french? well maybe but what you have is pretty nice. Try pendants and stools .. a different window treatment too.

You do not have a french country style kitchen but here's a visual of a few french country inspired ideas...

Please start by finding an inspiration image of a French Country kitchen with cherry cabinets and floors and a black granite counter. I may be wrong, but I don’t think you will be able to, because those are not elements you see in French country design.

When I think French Country Kitchen, I think of rustic and sophisticated light-filled spaces with painted cabinetry or honey-colored wood and a farmhouse table.

What you have is a classic American cherry kitchen with shaker cabinets. You can absolutely update it, but sometimes trying to make it into something it’s not you just end up with a mess.

I am 100% with you on your desire to replace the backsplash, but I’m going to encourage you to also think about painting your walls and changing your lighting. Your space reads dark in part because of the tobacco-stain color of the wall paint, and the overall lack of task lighting.

You currently have the belt and suspenders combination of a 4” granite strip topped by that square mosaic. I’m assuming you are keeping the raised counter on the peninsula, in which case you might consider removing the 4” granite strip and the mosaic tile everywhere but the peninsula - the entire window/range wall.

Then I would encourage you to find images of cherry kitchens you like and start searching for backsplash tile.

Copper! add some copper. And if you find copper cabinet hardware that isn’t highly-lacquered, or too dark, let me know, it is what I am looking for to up the Frenchiness of my kitchen. Add a brass table lamp with a fabric shade, perhaps in plaid or check. We actually have one on our breakfast table and I do love the coziness of it. And, there seems to be room for a small accent lamp with a fabric shade.

Checked or provençal placemats and such textiles. I rather enjoy looking at this blog’s kitchen, it’s a condo so she didn’t want to make too many changes but the touches really make a difference. (Hmm, links like below used to be green so it was easy to click on it.)

Thank you for the great ideas and suggestions. I’m going to look at more photos with the cherry cabinets and black granite countertops.

I’d definitely start with changing the backsplash
