calico aster lady in black who has it ?

With the nice weather I have been stopping at my garden center frequently. I usually browse and always leave with something. I also take pictures of stuff that interests me and go home and do some research. I saw this aster but can’t find too many first hand experiences about it. Asters were not always my favorite. Kind of weedy and an untamed looking. They put some at my job last year and they’ve grown on me and have their place. This one looks interesting and I am hoping for some input. Also post pictures of your asters and tell me about your favorites.

Very pretty. Do you know if it is a native aster? I may look for one. Thanks for the photos!

I have grown 'Prince', which is similar but starts out with purple-black foliage and distinctly pink flower centers.

Yes, it is a native species.

Like the majority of asters, it blooms late summer into early fall.

Symphiotrichum lateriflorum (Calico Aster) is native. It's very common in my area, and is usualy found in forested areas. The 3 aster species that imo are the most beautiful are S. georgianum, S. phlogifolium and S. sericeum. I grow S. ericoides, S.sericeum, S. lateriflora, S. shortii, S. drummondii, S. laeve, S. oblongifolium, S. lanceolatum, S. pilosum, Ive winter sowed, S. cordifolium, S. praealtum, S. prenanthioides, S. turbinellum, and S. puniceum. My Calico Aster seeds itself around very well. I love the silvery foliage and colorful flowers of my Silky Aster, S. sericeum. Ionactis linarifolia is a smaller aster, which is nice. There's also a climbing aster that is native to your area. It blooms late in the season. Eurybia macrophylla is a stunning aster for part shade. Eurybia and Ionactis were formerly in the genus Aster before their taxonomy was revised. I'm hoping to find a source for S. phlogifolium and S. patens. S. patens has perfoliate leaves. I guess my goal now is to grow every aster species that's native to my area, and also a few that aren't native to my area. I just weeded out about 10 Calico Aster vollunteers. My Calico, Aromatic, and Smooth Blue asters spread the most. I try to deadhead the plants when the seeds ripen. I can toss the seeds in natural areas and create a heaven for pollinators. Asters are considered weeds, by the plant- blind crowd, but they are all unique and beautiful for the lucky people, who appreciate them. Even now, there are still some aster entities that are still under study and as yet unclassified.

Silky Aster, Symphiotrichum sericeum. The silver foliage and large flowers. I lucked out and discovered I had an alba, white flowered form.

    Formerly Aster, Now doellingeria umbellata.

    Smooth Blue Aster, Symphyotrichum laeve.

New England Aster. Symphyotrichum novae-anglae. Might be Aromatic Aster?

    Calico Aster, Symphyotrichum lateriflorum.

    Heath Aster, Symphyotrichum ericoides.

    Georgia Aster, Symphyotrichum georgianum

Symphiotrichum phlogifolium, Thin-leaf Late Purple American Aster.

Symphyotrichum patens, Late Purple American Aster. I love the leaves.

Eurybia macrophylla, Large-leaf Aster. Photo Katy Chayka. Incredible foliage.

Carolina Climbing Aster, Ampelaster carolinianus. Climbers are rare in Asteraceae. The only other climber I know of is a Senecio species. Ampelaster was formerly Aster. There are a couple Asters in North America still named Aster because they are also native to Eurasia. The revision of Aster to Symphyotrichum was only concerned with the North American species. The North American Symphyotrichum species are more closely related to Goldenrods, than they are to Eurasian asters. Carolina Climbing Aster will continue to bloom late in the season when all other flowers have dissapeared.

Stiff Aster, Ionactis linarifolia. A smaller aster.

Eurybia divaricata. Beautiful dark red stems. It was formerly Aster divaricata. There is also a Symphyotrichum divaricata, that was another aster species that was given the new epithet during the revision.
