last month
last modified: last month

I live in a 100 year old home with this strange space when enter through the back door into the kitchen. I had a gallery wall hung up (all of the nails) and intend to move the bar cart but i am still not sure what to do with this odd space.

Please add additional photos showing the back door and kitchen so we can see how this space relates to the rest of the room.

All houses have odd spaces. One question is what kind of space are you missing? You could put a small desk there if you need more work space. You could put an armoire there if you need more coat storage. You could make it into a mini mud room. Since it's next to the pantry, you could add kitchen storage space --- maybe put a hutch there.

I need to see how this space relates to the rest of the house so a to scale floor plan would be perfect .

You don’t necessarily need anything there…

The first thing you do is get the tile off the wall and floor! It looks like someone planned a wood stove and changed their mind or had an indoor gardening fetish...and a perfectly nice kitchen is being ruined by those TWO things!

Fix the REAL problem, and what you hang on the wall, isn't the problem

Draw and add the dimensions of the wonky space behind the breakfast bar. .

But? Fix the real issues, more wood floor and drywall repair and paint.

This? It looks like a home Joe add on to the knee wall?

and it is probably the piece clogging up a space meant for a breakfast table, thus leaving no room for the breakfast table? Add a picture standing on the deck....

Whatever the heck is going on back there? It's ruining this

Not every nook and cranny of a home needs to be utilized. Unless it solves the problem of where to put X or where to do Y, then just leave it blank with two simple, medium pieces of art on the wall side by side.

From the added photos, it seems like more of a ”wall” than a ”space”.

Consider removing the cart, plant stand and wall tile.

    Repair the drywall/trim.

Add large artwork on the wall. Add a large tree or herb planter wall to the right of the cart facing the back sliding patio door.

It appears someone added a pony wall so they could put in breakfast bar seating. Is the tile half an installation of a wood stove or half a removal of one? I would remove the tile/the pony wall/stools and put in a corner nook with table and seating. It would bring back some of the original to the home charm.

Keep in mind that not all space needs to be filled with something. Sometimes less really is more.
