Please Advise on Wood Look Exterior Shutters

We are in So. Ca. and presently dealing with replacing termite damaged wood. Termites are an ongoing issue in this area and I’d like to save the new shutters from their wicked onslaughts. BUT, I want them to mimic the look of actual wood. Please say this is possible . I’d love your help.

TIA!

I need to see the house . IMO often nno shutters is a better choice and really fake wood fools no one

Decorative metal shutters have been used for decades in my area. They can be ordered in various styles. Typically, the raised wood grain shutters are painted in an accent color.

The wording was mimic the look, not trying to fool anyone with fake wood.

These powder coated aluminum from Larson look great.

And here in the West, also fireproof which we appreciate.

Regardless of the material, shutters look best when they look like they are functional with the proper size and hardware. Shutters screwed to the wall beside a window greater than half the size of the shutter look bad and express negative design.

Can anyone spot the design/function error?

Yes, I see it, maybe they mimic being on rails to slide closed..but we haven't even seen the house in question.

It's really up to individual taste. We've all seen skinny shutters for so long I don't think they're unexpected.

Mark, when relatives from the old country, where they actually use shutters, came to visit my grandparents’ new house in 1950 or so, they commented that the louvers should allow the rain to run down them when closed. So Grandfather swapped the shutters (already hinged, and righ–sized). But shutters are rarely closed here, so they stayed open when it rained and the water ran behind the louvers, between shutter and house. That’s not good. After a year they were switched back.

So, one can go to far with authenticity!

Here’s the house. Tho I love my home, it was never my preferred style, so few pics of the front. I did think shutters might warm it up a little . As you see, the two windows are on the upper right and will not receive close up scrutiny. Of course I’m aware of the proper size thing…and surely should be after being on gw for 20 years! 😄

they will be painted black , like the front door. Please do weigh in on your shutter style preference. also. Do ignore the shrubs..not the best look, I know.

Hmm, after looking a the pic, maybe the shutter color should match the roof, rather than black?

Your house is really nice without any shutters on those two upper windows. I don’t see how there’s room for shutters for the window on the right, unless you planned to remove that gutter ”piece” next to it…?

I rarely ”see” the front, and now I’m wondering about the house color as it‘s soon to be painted. Just ignore if I’m pushing my luck for your thoughts.

When the original owner built it he was vaguely going for this look. Makes me think a creamy white would be nicer than stark white. Love the green shutters , but only two windows shuttered would not have same impact, I think.

I will look at Larson, and ty for link, tracyfloyd!

Ty, chloebud. Its just the two facing front, not the smaller one ’round the corner. If there’s a small obstruction, our guy will adjust.

Omg what a beautiful house. I don't think it need shutters.

    No cream...pale gray.

I posted this photo for another thread but the soft pale gray would be gorgeous on your house.

Ignore the green awning that was for another house.

“If there’s a small obstruction, our guy will adjust.”

Got it. I agree with you regarding little impact with shutters on just those two windows. IDK…maybe out of place with the other windows. Also agree regarding a creamy white being nice.

Thanks for the like. Consider painting the rest of your house the same color as your trim is now. An all-over color similar to my inspo.

Maybe keep the brick and columns white. Or just the columns white? Thinking out loud here.

Cream is a yellowish color...can't picture it here.

This look is more similar to what I had in mind. I guess more of a California vibe to me...yes, I'm Californian.

@Mark Bischak, Architect "Can anyone spot the design/function error?" I'm guessing that it would be impossible to close the shutters because of the railing on the little balcony, so the shutters are clearly for looks only.

@martinca_gw sunset zone 24 I also think your house is very nice without shutters! It also looks like there might be a conflict with the gutter near the upper right window, the one on the wall perpendicular to the garage. Also the one above the garage only has room for one shutter. In my (non professional) opinion you can skip shutters.

Mark, ” you”talkin’ to me?” Ala de Niro :) Those are not my windows … so??

So, if not shutters, how about some heftier trim? ….

…if anyone’s still here. tfloyd, Nice look. Hey, Chicago, Guess little faux balcony could go on those windows.. I’ll tell dh and be outa the window :)

No, the sketch was in response to chicagoans.

Your house will need careful consideration in accommodating shutters where they will fit in.

Maybe if you buy aluminum shutters with hinges and latches, then crumple the corner of a few of the shutters it will look like termite damage and resemble wood.

Why on earth do you need shutters?

Concentrate on near to house landscaping, particularly at the right, where a plain brick wall is being accentuated!

The front door is being crowded!

I'd like to see a picture without every shade drawn like the boogey man was coming - it flattens the look of the whole elevation.

I'm no on the shutters. Sorry: ) you asked, ?? lol but good design doesn't force a look on something not begging for that look.

Lower the focal point DOWN and away from those upper windows.

@Mark Bischak, Architect - oof! Yes of course now I see it. But I still think the shutters wouldn't close with the rounded railing in front of the window. So I'm giving myself half credit LOL.

Jan..thank you. You just joined the majority of 👎 folks on the shutters. It’s now official !

Guess I should move over to Landscaping forum, tho would love ideas from anyone here . Jan, we need new tinted windows. They will block the sun, especially the lower left. my dh office.

Why is the front door crowded? Two pots of geraniums , plus ‘two chairs for friendship’’ ,!quoting Thoreau . You’d remove what?’Truly do,appreciate you all, and very glad I asked!!

I give myself none... but imagination is better than too harshly digital....which I can't do

Oh! Think I see. Remove the shrubs hunkered up around the columns….and the stupid one by garage. Right? 👍 And, I see you’ve muntined the windows . I’d love that…except When paying the window washer :)

This will all take some time, but you all stopped a bad idea in its tracks.

Think tree!!! Right under those windows!!

Maybe get a great light left of the house numbers!

Don't be afraid of big pots and bring them out proud of the steps

Love the drawings, Jan. Nice of you to bother :) A tree there would need to be …forget the name.. .pinned to the brick wall to allow access To that garage door. House numbers are out by the street.

That damn garage door/tight 90 * turn and the limiting effect it puts on landscaping is a real pain in the ass!

Go take pictures further back....more angles. Go out to the street, as well! : )

All the shrubbery looks dated....: (

You can have "muntin" inside only, clip in, true divided light is a fortune$$$$$$
