Help with 48" closet in mud room

Discussing with hubby how we can make this closet both a broom (vacuum, etc) and coat and shoe closet. He said it's too small to divide this space to both purposes. Any designers out there who have a better idea? This is where we hang our coats and jackets and take off our shoes from outside. I'd also like to out the shoe dryer there too.

Use cabinets to make a built-in closet instead of walls/sheetrock. It will cost a bit more, but give you more flexibility in the design. Stack the W&D and you will have even more room and flexibility. Do a section for coats and another section with drawers and shelves for shoes.

This is more space than you have, but gives you the general idea.

Can you stack the washer dryer to make room to add a 2nd closet or a wider cabinet?

You could partition the existing closet to have up to 12” allocated to a pull-out to hold brooms, etc. but not a vacuum. Assuming the remaining apace is sufficient for coats, etc.

Are the two 36” hinged doors in that space exterior or interior?

Not very elegant but we hang broom and swiffer on the back of the door between our laundry and kitchen. That wall between half bath and washer could have pegboard or coat hooks to hang things. Also think of the walls on either side of the window for hooks and maybe thin shelves. A tiny broom closet could be cut into the sheetrock between the studs.

If budget allows, get a stacked washer & dryer to place on the right side of that space. Then add storage cabinet for utility items along the left wall where washer currently sits.

Will be hard to use this closet as both - broom closet and coat closet. The coats are going to be in the way of getting a vacuum or brooms out.
