Longwood 2026 planning-aka, the general email for Conversations

last modified: 2 days ago

(ETA: Sounds like we may have picked the 18th all along. I won't delete this post though because the flowers are so pretty.)

How would you all feel about moving the 2026 Longwood GTG from April 25th to April 18th? The reason I bring it up is because I am afraid our spectacular tulip display will have peaked by the 25th and will be on the decline (still pretty, but not as incredible.)

I watched the displays like a hawk this year with all of you in mind and by the 25th, the tulips were looking a bit spent and most of the early daffodils had been pulled and replaced by spring plantings.

(This was taken on April 19th this year. Many were dropping petal a week later. Still beautiful, but not as perfect. FYI--we plant 250K spring bulbs each year.)

(and if you've never seen a yellow double tulip, all I can say is wowza.)

For me too. This is bad.

So it may be time to find a new gathering place. We discussed it a few years back, but the site got an update—- minimal, and less functional but at least it worked. The original code used to create the GW forum seems to be deteriorating with each new Houssz update, and it is fairly obvious that at some point, perhaps sooner than we think, the legacy platform / topics will disappear. Are we ready to start planning our move?

There is an alternate that was created, where politics is not verboten. It works pretty well IMHO and is moderated. It is less active because it is more of a closed system.

    What is the site?

Yes, where is it and how do we access?

Probably best to share by private message rather than publicly to keep it from getting overrun. I read frequently but rarely post.

I too would like to know the site.

  • yesterday

    Good idea, Ded.

  • yesterday

    Yes, ded.

  • yesterday

Please include me. I would like to know the site also.

  • yesterday

I’d like the information as well.

  • yesterday

I don't recall what it is --- might be in my email somewhere --- onmy phone will look later

  • yesterday

Sheesh and jsk, I cant message you unless you change your settings.

  • yesterday

    Mtn, you’ve got email

This site isn't perfect but I'm not ready to bail. It was partially down for the weekend and it's not a bad idea to take a break when that happens. Life will go on.

Regarding the other website, I might be missing something. I am on my cellphone and don't see a link to register . I don't have access to a computer. FAQs say that the administrators sometimes remove the ability for new users to register.

My current problem with this site is that I cannot post new threads by any means— phone, tablet or computer. Now going on day 3 or 4. It is likely a harbinger of things to come. We may not be ready to leave lock, stock and barrel but IMO we need a Plan B in place asap, considering.

  • yesterday

Try Contact Us at the bottom of the home page. Looks like new registrations are sometimes turned off.

I keep hoping the glitch here will be resolved soon.

DEDTIRED. I cannot change my settings because houzz requires me to get a new email address. This IS my new email address after my orignal email was hacked last summer. I just tried to email you but the site wont allow me to because ”there is a problem with your password.” However, the site will not allow me to change my pw unless i change my email which i wont do! Sign me Stymied!

    Dedtired, i messaged you

Ded - would you please pass along the other site to me as well. Thank you.

I can think of 2 possible sites. I thought I had saved them just in case this place disappeared overnight but I can only find one - and I never joined.

I would like other sites if they have NO politics!

jsk, I cant message you unless you change your settings.

ded - I should have settings to allow you to message me. I've gotten messages before.

I checked and don't see anything about allowing/not allowing that. Can you point me in the right direction?

    ETA: I messaged you.

Ded, just read your message to contact administrator of POV. Have done so and awaiting reply. Will let you know if I am able to register. thx!

  • yesterday

    I contacted the administrators also.

  • yesterday

    Sherry, lots of political talk.

  • yesterday

I was just able to post a new thread. Maybe I'm the only one who sees it. Assuming it's real, why are others having problems posting here?

  • yesterday

Bunny - I tried that this morning. I could see my topic but it never posted to Conversations.

Thanks Dedtired - that's the site I was thinking of. I initiated a membership but never followed through.

  • yesterday

Bunny I cannot see your thread. I posted this morning and got a comment but was only able to respond to it because the notification came to my email. I could not see the post.

Bunny, I can't see your thread. Mine were on the board for a minute or two then vanished. I can see them in my account activity.

I contacted Houzz support about it last night. I usually get an auto reply but nothing so far.

  • yesterday

I can’t see it either Bunny. unfortunately it seems this is an issue that affects everyone.

  • yesterday

You're all right. It has been disappeared. It was there at the top of the list of other threads, at least for a few minutes. I even edited it slightly. Now it's gone. I don't think it has anything to do with the topic (Gelli plate art), but is just a glitchy site.

Although much of what we discuss here has political implications--as does life in general--I'm not here for that. I have IRL people with whom I get in the political weeds. And then I need to take a break. I don't need this site or any alternatives for that.

  • yesterday

I haven been on here for a bit, so not sure what is going on. But, please include me in any potential move to a new site.

  • yesterday

Just because thats the name of the forum doesn't mean we can’t discuss anything we want once we get ”our” room set up…..

  • yesterday

Maybe we should start arguing about politics on another thread and see how quickly it gets deleted. That way we would know if there is anyone paying attention here.

    You go first.

  • yesterday

I’ve never cared for Ruggables, although DD loves hers. However, this Gracie rug may change my mind!

Posting so I don’t forget when everything gets fixed….🤞

Oh BBSTX, that is pretty! I think they have come out with somewhat thicker rugs now.

I have not been on the other site much, but It seems to me that the politics there is discussed on a thread about politics. So you can easily avoid it if you want to talk about decor or cooking or whatever.

Here, because we are not allowed, politics can show up anywhere when an apolitical convo goes off the rails.

  • yesterday

POV has been a closed forum to prevent spammers, but we've opened registration so you can join directly without using the Contact Us link. I'm happy to have anyone from Home Decor Convos join. There is a general chat section, and if you post there the same as you do in HD Convos, it may be more enticing for those who aren't into current event discussions and just want to get together with old friends. Everyone on POV is from GW so you'll see some familiar faces.

Thank you Eileen for posting this info and opening the registration on POV. I am relieved that there is a more than viable alternative to this forum. If this were an old Star Trek episode this would be the time when the SS Houzz is shaking and coming apart, hurtling towards a black hole. No more white knuckles, no more hoping Captain Kirk will save the day….. there’s a new planet to call home. 🪐

    edited to correct the reference!

POV is a good site. Lively, with mostly like-minded, well-informed posters. I read there everyday, post irregularly. Im Sheesh. Oh! And unlike here, it’s easy to type there, too!

  • yesterday

If another site is decided please count me in. It's odd that no moderator is advising how long the outage is expected to be or any other information. Not unexpected, just not so ok. Is this deliberate? Are other forums affected?

  • yesterday

Tried to sign up on POV but never got confirmation…seems like we are okay again here, tho.

  • yesterday

I plan to check in at POV regularly regardless of what happens on GW. While I don’t want to exist in an echo chamber, I could definitely use more areas of ”like-mindedness” in my life right now. Thank you for that endorsement of the site, Sheesh.

  • yesterday

Sueb, you should have gotten an email to confirm your registration. Check your spam folder. It shows your registration as inactive right now, as well as bbstx and lisaam's registrations.

    We’re back! Yay.

Thanks Eileen, finally came through. All set!

I put in the wrong email address. I guess I need to reregister. 🙃
