Do you have a 5+ year old refrigerator that you are still happy with?

What brand?

Our seven year old Whirlpool is not fixable, the compressor died. We previously had a GE that only lasted five years. All I want is a French door without the ice/water in the door.

I've been told that Whirlpool is one of the better ones along with LG and Frigidaire (surprised at that one). Everyone seems to say to stay away from Samsung. I don't want a premium brand, just a regular one. Thanks!

Just moved into a condo with a 14 year old Frigidaire that is working fine.

I had a Fisher Paykel for 12 years, and then got a new FP for a renovation three years ago. Both were/are problem free, and I love the way they look as well as function. I have good friends who got one four years ago based on my recommendation- no problem there, either.

My ten year old LG has never had a problem. Stainless, French door, no water/ice through the door.

Have a 13 year old KitchenAId French-door w/o through the door anything. (KA being a Whirlopool brand which shared mechanical and electrical components with Whirlpool and Maytag models.) Still works as well as it did when I got it . It may or may not matter that I never hooked up the water line for the internal water dispenser and removed the in-freezer ice-maker to get more freezer space. All that being said, Whirlpool fridge quality has gone up and down and back and forth over more recent years as you will find if searching on the brand here. So, my experience may or may not be a good predictor of the quality of the company's current line up. One thing of note --- my 33"-wide x 30"-deep model was considered full depth when I bought it but many models now being sold as "counter-depth" seem to be even deeper than mine.

In my last house I had a Samsung FD that i really liked for the five years until I sold the house. It had an upper and lower ice maker which I specifically wanted, but also came without.

I have french door LG that is 11 years old and only had one issue when we first got it. The heated bar between the doors stopped working so we would get condensation. Was under warranty and replaced. No issues since.

I was very happy with my KA and had it over >13 years, before I moved out (it was still working well). My current LG is 7 years old (I did turn off the ice maker when I moved in 3 years ago). If I had to buy one now, I'd look at KA or LG. However, I want no ice or water through the door, and would prefer no ice or water dispenser at all, so it does limit my choices.

I've had Samsung fridges in 2 different houses and been quite pleased with them. Both were the style you describe - French door, no ice/water in door (but there is an icemaker in the freezer). Not sure where the hesitancy for the brand comes from, but I've had no complaints about mine.

My 1995 Kenmore still works great! Except the plastic bits on the drawers break off.

Whirlpool was allowed to buy out their domestic competition in Amana and Kitchenaid. They then brought us poor quality, short lifespan and one-year warranty. IKEA has a 5-year warranty on all their appliances. They began supplying Whirlpool. They dropped Whirlpool. Electrolux is their supplier.

After Hitachi and Panasonic, the most popular refrigerator in Japan is Sharp SJG2351FS, although the Japanese version is 220v. Sharp Counter-depth 22.5-cu ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker (Stainless Steel) ENERGY STAR SJG2351FS at Lowes.com We need Hitachi and Panasonic too.

LG - nine years old, no ice or water in the door, 36" full depth. Works great.

"Despite their popularity, only two French-door brands, Bosch and Fisher & Paykel, earned very good ratings for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction" -- CR "Most and Least Reliable Refrigerator Brands"

Though not top-rated, the Bosch B36CT80SNS did well in CR's tests though it's expensive. The B36FD10ENS did almost as well and is much cheaper though it's not counter-depth and has a door dispenser.

"dan1888: Whirlpool was allowed to buy out their domestic competition in Amana and Kitchenaid."

Whirlpool bought KitchenAid in 1986 so that's ancient history in the appliance world. KitchenAid didn't offer refrigerators until then so there's no reference for pre-1986 KitchenAid-branded refrigerators AFAIK. KitchenAid offered cooking appliances after they bought the Chambers company in 1985 ... which came along with the Whirlpool purchase.

Maytag got Amana in 2001/2002 as part of purchasing the appliance division of Goodman Manufacturing. Amana came along to Whirlpool when Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006.

Our Whirlpool SxS counter-depth refrigerator is almost six years old. Three years ago, after the warranty expired, the exterior water dispenser developed a slow leak. (I know you said you are not looking for that but it is anecdotal of brand history) Cost would be approx. $700 to repair and that's half what we paid for it as new. Hmmm... We passed and keep a custard cup on the shelf to catch the drips.

Last year, the little door that regulates the cold for the refrigerator side broke and everything was freezing. (imagine cracking a fresh egg and it is frozen....) We had that repaired to the tune of $400 and the part has a one year warranty. ;-p

I would be hard-pressed to buy another Whirlpool without doing a lot of reliability research.

OP here. I had an LG French door delivered a few days ago. It is the style I wanted, no ice or water in the door. I got the five year extended warranty because I'm sure that the icemaker won't last.

Hopefully it will be a long time before I update this and ask what brand I should buy next!

Commercial True fridge. About ten years old. One repair, replaced thermostat ($40 and two screws). Am expecting it to outlive me. OTOH, a commercial fridge is not most people's cup of tea.

SubZero. Going on 10 years and no issues.

When we bought our house in 1998 my mom bought us a Whirlpool freezer on the bottom refrigerator. It still works really well and has never needed any repairs. We'll be moving next year into a custom build house and plan to purchase a Subzero since I don't trust the quality of most refrigerators now. Hubby plans on taking our Whirlpool with us and putting it in the garage.
