Keep cupboards around bed?

last month
last modified: last month

I recently bought an apartment & it came with these cupboards all around the bed. There is also a separate big wardrobe on the other side. As a result, I feel like they are blocking the space & not adding value this not worth it. They are in decent shape. I am planning to rent out the space if that matters.

Excellent storage for a rental. I'd keep them.

I guess if you are not living in it and just renting it out, leave it until they are too damaged. Put the least amount of money in unnecessarily as this is an investment property.

Definitely keep, if renting. People love extra storage.

    Definitely keep!

Definitely keep! That level of storage is going to be very attractive to renters. I would add trim at the top to fill the gap between cabinets and ceiling, to eliminate a cleaning issue.

Are you talking short term renters as in VRBO, or long term? Short term has little use for extra storage as you show, especially the cupboards above the bed. Personally I’d prefer a cleaner look- no cabinetry.

Even a VRBO needs storage for extra linens, pillows and blankets

One crummy photo doesn't explain the entire room. We need to see the location of the closet, windows and if there is another location for the bed.

I would keep them - if it was a house with a basement, maybe it would make sense to open the room up a bit. However, it seems like an apartment always could use some extra storage.

I had a similar idea as Maureen above - your cabinets would be easy to update.

You could add some trim to make the doors look like shaker doors:

You also could add some picture moulding + add a thin center panel:

There are many ideas if you look up how to update Pax cabinet doors. In the photo below, they added some dowels in order to create some fluted doors:

Here they added some textured peel and stick wall paper below (you can add whatever type of peel and stick wallpaper that you like):

A different trim added + long gold handles + some crown moulding on the top:

As someone else also commented above, you could make the cabinets look "built-in" if you added to the top of the cabinet - here they just used a board to raise the cabinets to the ceiling:

Here they added trim + long brass pulls + crown moulding to take the cabinets to the ceiling:

Wow! So many great ideas! Thank you folks. I also added a video link to give a bit more of a comprehensive sense of the room!

You are renting out the apartment or the room? I can see your question given the trim work on the storage in that room do not match. Can one or the other be changed so they do match?

With the built-ins facing the bed it does make for a lot of built-ins in the room.

Is there anywhere the above can be relocated in the house?

Also difficult to tell the exact colour of all the built-ins in the room, are they white or yellow? If yellow, I would paint all of them white.

Unfortunately I cant move the built in opp the bed somewhere else. Its either there or taken out completely.

Is there or will there be more than one bed in this room? on bottom right (under the books) looks like another bed so perhaps that's why there is so much storage in this room?
