Need Functional Yet Attractive Foyer in Coastal Remodeled Home

Update with New pics and floor plan:

The main entry foyer of our remodeled 1940 Coastal retirement cottage must serve as a "mudroom" and welcome foyer due to limited space as per zoning. (Maryland Critical Chesapeake Bay legislation allowed VERY limited sq ft addition so close to waterway.) We would like a little seat/bench/chair to help with taking shoes on and off and a neat place for those shoes. What do I need to make this foyer highly functional, pulled together and pretty? Our colors are dark blue/navy and cream/white. The floor is the same throughout the house. Thank you all!

This is the front door. Paved walkway entrance. Stone driveway:

Same view of front door with closet open. Yet unrenovated unattached garage is seen thru window with car in front.

Waterside of the foyer has double doors opening to screen porch:

Please clarify - the double doors Ethan Allen stool sitting in front of - closet or ?? The wall opposite the double doors - what’s length from door stop to end of that wall? It’s on same side of the entry ”room” as the entry to main living space? Might be helpful if you post a quick sketch of this ’room’ with openings labeled - that detail will confirm orientation of space.

Thank you. Good points and will do a sketch by tomorrow. The double doors next to blue stool is a closet.

Good deal! Thanks Rosita. I’m sure more detail will generate more usable suggestions. I’m now thinking about that closet. A coat closet is what I’m guessing. You said your home is remodeled - just done & by you? I ask as I assume that would limit any major changes you’d be willing to make to get your ’mud room’ set up. I also don’t know how much storage you have throughout house & if you have seasonal coats in that closet or just light jackets. My point is, though the doors are lovely & add much, could they be removed and a bench / closet set up be created inside the closet space? I’m also looking at the far corner with the cute drop leaf table & chair - is that space an option for bench to sit on with shoe rack built in or are you having muddy / sandy shoes & boots & don’t want them traipsing across space from entry door? The issue with the footstool location is that you can’t open the one door of closet with anything in the way. That’s why I asked about length of wall the entry door opens onto - length from door stop to end of that wall.

Why are shoes not in the closet ? No way a bunch of hooks would be better for sure. How many kids and what do they need to have there ? I see tables if shoe storage is amust exchange one of those for a shoe cabinet / bench. One ruggable rug to provide the entry and the foyer floor not 2 mismatched ones . I alswys like an entry to be a peek at the rest of the interior so maybe lets us see your LR.

No need to take off closet doors; just outfit the inside to meet your every day storage needs.

Suggest you do something like this behind the left closet door. Bench to sit, hooks for jacket/hats. On the wall behind the right closet door, have hanging for longer coats. Additional shoe storage, but no bench.

Rosita, What a nice home you have. View of the water is lovely. I do like the ceiling light in this entry. With your additional pics & floor plan I understand the layout & that the door swing wall is 31” from corner to door stop. I’m guessing that full wall is 5’1” if I’m reading plan correctly. Even if not it appears there’s a couple feet from stop to corner. My thought is to put a sitting piece in that spot & move the footstool out. The footstool is too low IMO & I wouldn’t want the closet blocked in any way. No changing of closet design either. For a sitting piece I have couple thoughts. I’m looking at the pretty chair by the drop leaf table. I’d try it in that space on wall for sitting to put shoes on. The other piece I’m wondering about is the wooden bench under the window with the geranium & crab art in it. Looks like top is inset like a dry sink. It looks very low & I can’t guess what original function is. I’m guessing it’s a vintage piece? Is it sturdy enough to be a bench? If yes, could you have a pillow made to fill the inset top up & create a sitting piece from it? It looks like a perfect size & shape to fit close to door stop on that wall. If it fits & is sturdy enough, I like it better than the chair. Last thought is about rug. I’d try to find matching rugs for entry door & screened porch door & a longer one & maybe a bit wider than the one at screened porch. It looks like 2 rugs at entry door. The rug at entry door I’d want to be at least as long as the door is wide.

The only place for a bench is on the wall to the right of the French doors. What you have there now is a bit much--a table with a lamp and accessories, plus a chair, a doodad on the floor and a framed picture?

The entryway/foyer as is has no room for anything else. Just wondering if this is in an area that gets snow? If not, do you really need to sit down to take shoes on and off? Because boots might necessitate that, but regular shoes don't.

I agree that about the only spot for a bench is the wall to the right of the entry door although it can't really be too long so as to interfere with the door. Might also suggest a shallow table underneath the window for a key drop. Would keep all mats outside instead of having any inside. Can shoes be stored on low shelving in the closet itself? Would lastly suggest you replace the round rug with a rectangular one.
