Anyone growing Gatsby moon? OT ***roses companion plants

last month
last modified: last month

I apologize for including roses here, but I know many of the rose gardeners grow hydrangeas also and could chime in.

I fell in love with hydrangea Gatsby moon at a local nursery and took three home. Now I am concerned this plant was a big fail because I cant Find a single picture of a mature plant online. The tag says 6-8 feet tall which would be great for the area I want it. I found posts online saying this plant only flopped and didn’t grow after years in the ground. I would love to place it in the corner of my foundation, but I don’t want to waste years, I want a full size large plant there at least 6 to 10 feet tall ideally. I would love to hear anything good or bad from those growing it. Thank you!

I think B Maggic-Ontario Z6 bought one some years ago so try sending a gardenweb mail. In the south, it is bound to grow taller and wider faster than in the north due to the long growing seasons.

Luis thank you for your comment. I was also hopping to hear from Gardengal. I guess people just dont like it? I am even more surprized people here dont have much to say about it either.

I just saw beautiful photos of Gatsby Pink on Wayside Gardens email to me. It's a Proven Winners hydrangea and grows to 10 feet at maturity. Is this the same one as the hydrangea you are asking about? The photos are just gorgeous on Wayside's site. Diane

Diane it isnt the same plant as Gatsby pink, but it is also a Proven winners hydrangea. All I can find are these pictures from them with young plants.

aka 'Brother Edward', it hasn't been around all that long (10 years?). I've grown a number of different oakleafs - some large, most compact - but not this one. Personally, I do not care for the very full, almost ruffled flowers. Gatsby Moon is listed as a 'compact' variety so if you want a full size oakleaf, this may not be the best choice.

Thank you Gardengal48! Is there any full size you would recomend? The larger the better. Thank you!

IMO, Snow Queen is hard to beat.

Dianela - I am not growing any Gadsby but I have 'Snow Queen' and it is very reliable. I had some deer fencing installed 3 years ago and the installers were merciless on these 'Snow Queen' (pics att). We had to take many branches off the backsides to make the fence fit (actually to make the Hydrangeas fit). I also have 'Queen of Hearts' which may fit your criteria - mine has not reached full height/width yet.

I bought Gatsby Pink last fall and planted in a new grouping of hydrangeas that I’m hoping will grow in my Arizona climate. I planted it in a shady, protected area under a mesquite tree in the corner of my yard where two stone walls meet. It was looking quite happy until the toddler my daughter babysits jumped on it and broke it off at the base. I’m hoping it grows back from the root.

There, that doesn’t help you at all though, I know.

Wayside Gardens is really promoting Gatsby Pink right now with sale prices. If I had the space I would try that one. It's gorgeous and unusual. On Proven Winners website, if viewing Gatsby Pink, you can click on "more Images" to see how it does in a garden environment.

Dianela, I apologize for all the Gatsby Pink info. I got waylaid by the beautiful images. I hope your questions get answered fully.

Judi, I hope your GP recovers fully. I'd post more unwanted comments, but I'd better not. I hope to see your photos of a thriving GP in the future. Diane

Diane I am all for some hydrangea enabling here and WANT Gatsby pink too. They do not have it at my local garden center but I am planning on asking them to find it for me. They are already looking into bringing me a Summer Snow gardenia to try ( zone 6 hardy )

Judi thank you for your post and I had written a reply but would not post. I love how your hydrangeas look and I was not familiar with Queen of Hearts so thank you for recommending her. I love all kinds of hydrangeas. I do have deer and not a good way of fencing so I was hopping the larger varieties could survive better. Hopping to find good ways of using hydrangeas with roses as the paniculatas seem to take sun well here.

Best wishes on the finding the hydrangeas you want, Dianela. I have hopes that my Gatsby pink just might make it after all…. Yesterday I saw the teeniest tiniest little green sprouting coming up out of the base where mine got snapped off. It’s covered with a wire cloche
so the little fellow doesn’t jump on it again.

Judi I hope it recovers quickly. I do not know if you ever watch garden videos in YouTube but I watch Gardenanswer and she grows Gatsby pink which performs incredible for her. I definitely do not know how much I will be able to achieve without a fence and the deer around here but I next year will be interesting for sure. I am currently working on the foundation planting of the house and it has been ok but I am adding lots of boxwood and stuff they don’t like.

I have it, dianela but I am already in my pj’s and am not getting off the couch unless I’m going to bed but tomorrow morning I will send you a current full bush shot

Thank you so much Oursteelers! Your plant looks so healthy and beautiful. How old is your plant? How big would you say it is? I planted mine at the end of a border, but maybe I need to move it to a corner where It can be seen better. Yours has a lot of buds right now, how much sun is it getting?

  • last month

Im gonna say four hours at the most and its probably five years old. It came in a tiny little 4 inch pot from either Garden Crossings or Wayside

I have Gatsby Moon growing in my Portland Oregon garden. It's only been in the ground a few weeks but is growing vigorously and is covered with flower panicles. It is fairly floppy but IME many quercifolias do that initially. I chose it for its total lack of pink and it has not let me down! I could post a photo later if you want, but right now it's in blazing sun and the photo quality would be awful.
