Who still has the heat on?

last month

Its been chilly here, as well as more rainy days than usual. Ive been freezing inside the house so I turned the heat back on. My friend was in disbelief, saying its nearly the end of May! You shouldnt be running the furnace!

I say I dont care. If Im cold , I turn on the heat. Ive run the AC a few days this month, too. Between the rain, wind and chilly weather, Ive hardly used my porch at all.

How about you? Do you run your HVAC according to the temperature or the date?

Our thermostat is still set to Heat. I had lunch with my aunt today, she lives in senior living, and said that the heat was turned off May 1 or 15! Everyone is sleeping in their sweatshirts and socks and ordering space heaters.

I am with you. I finally decided I am too old to be uncomfortably cold. I have turned ours back on at this point. No AC yet. I refuse to turn it on before June and I would be more than happy to wait until July.

Irish, I had put my extra blanket away but got it out again.

I have had the heat off for a couple of weeks — thermostat was set to 66. Just this week I’ve been opening windows and the indoor temperature is now at 70-71 during the day. Of course there’s a mini heatwave inland, and we’re feeling a tiny bit if that. Low coastal clouds drift in early to mid afternoon.

Oh you Californians and your nice weather! ;) My brother and son live there and they both have sunny and low 70s today.

You’re about due for your June Gloom.

My mother runs the central heat all year round and lives where the summers are extremely hot. I said, why not just open the door, but you know how that was received.

I never use central heat in my temperate zone.

We had a great warm spell at the end of April and beginning of May and then it got cold here again. It snowed on Monday! We had the insulation removed from the attic in this house when we bought it in March and as soon as the temp went up outside, the house was not holding temp well and we briefly turned the AC on for a day or two. (That and my dog has very strange anxiety from wind blowing when she's inside, especially if the windows are open. We had to close them to sleep and couldn't keep the windows open to cool down.) Then we turned the heat back on this week because it was just too cold. Now it's back to the 70s so everything is off and we're opening the windows in the mornings and then closing up in the afternoon. I similarly agree that we should use HVAC as needed and the dates don't matter (unless you've winterized the AC unit or something).

DHs parents were/are the ultimate in, uh, thrift.. No heat allowed till Nov 1. And off April 1. Temperature did not dictate, the, calendar did. AC didn't much matter as they rarely used it unless it was well over 90. This is in Chicago where 40s in May are not unusual at all. To give you an idea of their depth of their thrift - the house they built in 1956 still has the original furnace and AC units. Neither has seen the expected use for their age! We operate like mtn. - heat or AC as needed.

I'm not back in MN yet but I turned the furnaces back on. I got a low temperature warning on my thermostat app! Not the time of year when pipes will freeze but I turned the heat on anyway. If I'm cold I turn the heat on regardless of the date. Same thing if I'm hot.

98 in FL yesterday - cooling to high 80's over the weekend. AC has basically been on since early April. Hate our temps June-mid October. Wish I had a cabin in the mountains for the off months.

I had turned my oil hot water main heat off and the mini-split heat on not long ago, then turned it off altogether with the warmer days we had for a short while - until the other night when it plummeted to the low 40's. It's been too cold for me to suffer any more at my age. Last 2 nights I turned on my heated mattress pad - thankfully I hadn't already packed it away for the season. Procrastination can have its benefits.

I don't turn the heat (or the A/C) on or off. The thermostat is set to the temps we want day/night. It does what it needs to do to keep it at that temp. It's nice to not think about it anymore. Having said that, I'm pretty sure the heat has come on. Especially at night. It's been crazy cold for May.

Central Oklahoma here... my a/c has been on for about 2 weeks. But I still have the electric blanket on my bed and I've used it a few nights.

The heat was on this morning for sure -- I was driving to meet my son and two other volunteers for lunch and a display sign was showing 95 degrees before noon. The car was showing 91 degrees. We had a little shower this afternoon and it cooled down. We did have really nice and cooler than average weather for much of the spring, but that seems to be over now. I'm guessing the heat indoors won't be on again before Thanksgiving.

I have to admit having mixed feelings about your cooler weather - it's not July weather, but it's also not exactly spring/start of summer.

I share the same weather as ded and jojo. Yesterday it never got out of the 50's and was chilly, grey and raining.

I believe that the HVAC system is here for our comfort so I have no problem turning it on or off as needed. I love my Nest thermostat and change the temperature anytime. The bedroom was fine but I did turn on the gas fireplace to take the chill off the family room.

I live in NYC and was startled awake during an afternoon nap thinking my someone was walking around my apartment. Then I realized the familiar noise - it's my radiators kicking on. I don't control the heat in my coop building. But am glad that whoever does let it kick on today.

Except for a few days here and there our heat has been off since mid April. When it’s chilly in the spring I like to light the fire and sit by it in the living room instead of using central heating.

We have a programmable Nest thermostat, but I never use the heat/cool setting. Not sure why, but it makes me feel good to turn off the AC or heat completely.

We live in north AL and it is May 24th. It is raining and 62 outside. The heat just came on.

Since we can be up or asleep anytime day or night, I set the temp to one we like anytime.

ETA: I set to 73f. My electric bill went down after I did this. It used to go up during the day and down at night.

We have had some above average temps and some below average temps recently which isn't unusual for us during May. If it's cold yes, I turn on the furnace regardless of the date.
