What size of art to go with…again!

last month

I had posted this a little over a month ago asking for help on what size of artwork I should get for this dining room wall. I really love Ashvin Harrison and I first saw him on Facebook right when I was in the midst of my separation and divorce and his piece “The Garden Girl” spoke to me. Some of the original suggestions said to move my buffet to the big wall where I would want to hang the piece and maybe put some stuff on the table or near the table to accent.

I had some friends over yesterday and they helped me move the buffet to the other wall. I also went to a colleague‘s house who was having an estate sale because they are moving and bought this little plant that will go on the buffet. I still have not ordered the artwork bc I still don’t know what size to order. The buffet is 60 inches wide. The wall is 9 feet tall and then goes up to the special ceiling from there.

My options are 24 x 30, 30 x 40, or 36 x 48. You can see that when you first walk in my house, your eye could definitely be drawn to that wall. I want it to be a piece that is noticed, but I don’t want it to be overpowering because I have several other pieces that I’m going to hang up around my living room room and they all kind of have that colorful and contemporary aesthetic.

I really want to go ahead and get this ordered, I’m just worried that I’m gonna order the wrong size and the piece is shipped from Australia and I wanna make sure I do this right the first time.

What size do I get 😂🙃😊

No plant and go big IMO I would aslo paint that wall a color from the art I often use a color that is not dominant when I do this .

The table should be centered on the window and under the decorative fixture.

The buffet is too short for the size of the table. In order to use this buffet, I'd keep 4 chairs at the table and one chair on either side of the buffet.

Slide the buffet closer to the center of the wall

Place a chair on either side

Place your art above. The art should be no smaller than 36" wide.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I just moved in recently and just moved the buffet so I will get all of that centered. After my divorce, I downsized to a much smaller house, so the dining space is the only place I really have for it.

I would very much like to get some drapes and hardware for the space! I am not sure what I want yet. I figured I could get the artwork and then get the drapes based off if it. I want the artwork to shine though.

Thank you for the suggestion of buying pieces from the alternate site. I will see if I can find Garden Girl on it. If I can't, I will be Garden Girl from him possibly and look at that alternate site and see if there is anything else that speaks to me. (A lot of his work does.)

Follow Beverly's suggestions for measurements and placement--two chairs on the side of the buffet. Hang curtains the same shade as your upholstered chairs to add richness to your dining area.

    Some additional thoughts:

--Consider swinging around your sectional so you have one side of it facing your back door and window. This will extend and open the room quite a bit.

--To balance out the huge black TV screen looming over the room, look for a couple art works on the walls that echo the art work you plan to get. An abstract in the Ashvin Harrison palette would look great on another wall. Repeat those colors in sofa pillows.

I made the adjustments suggested by Beverly and I really like the look of it with the chairs on both sides of the buffet. I don’t really have a light fixture, just can lights in the ceiling which is fine. I do have a table leaf, but I thought it would make the table too big for the space.

I have a big piece of cardboard so measured it and marked off the sizes with marker so I could get a better idea of the size of the artwork.

I think the 24 x 30 is too small. It’s the cardboard sideways with a line in black marker.

30x40 might be good. It’s vertically lined up cardboard with the black line showing the 40 inch height. I went ahead and ordered the 30 x 40 tonight as a birthday present for myself.

    Curtain Idea #1

Any thoughts of these drapes? I was wondering if the yellow ones would look good? Or the champagne with gold, sage green with gold, white with gold? I normally don't gravitate to gold, but I think it would compliment the sunflowers and other yellow accents in the piece.

I have been warming up to gold recently!

    Curtain Idea #2

    yellow and gray might work!!

    Curtain #3

    white or maybe other colors

Large paintings always look amazing on a wall! They make such a bold statement and really bring a space to life and transform a room. Love the idea of going big with art!

I came here to say what Patricia said. Go big or go home.

SLIDE EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM TO THE LEFT!!!

That includes the buffet and the dining table.

Make sure there is at least 6 inches of space between the buffet and the dining chairs that are up against the wall. You want these items to take over more of the wall space in the room.

OMG! I hear Beverly raising her voice to move everything LEFT! 😂

Moved and the table and chairs are centered more under the recessed lighting! Can’t go too much further bc that’s the best place for my dog and her food and water.

Now to figure out the curtain situation….

  • last month

Curtain ideas: I’ve never had molding above the window before, but I think it’s really pretty. Not sure if that affects how the curtain rod should be hung. I have a 95” curtain set from my old house that might work, so I’d just need hardware? It’s fairly neutral.

I’ve also found a few other curtain options and would love opinions. I’m a teacher and now that it’s summer, I finally have time to work on this! There are green curtains that match the foil weave options I liked, but I’m not sure if they’d clash with the chairs. I liked the idea of yellow, but most I’ve seen online are mustard, which I’m not a fan of. There’s also a gray and yellow patterned curtain that might coordinate well with the artwork?

I plus keep it light so your chosen artwork is the star. Here are ideas from Wayfair.

She’s here, she’s beautiful, and she’s mine!! Down to two curtain choices. The linen curtain with green flowers is kind of sheer and the other one is a little more opaque, and I think I want to get a floating frame to help it stand out against the wall? Painting the wall isn’t really an option!!

    How high to hang her???
