Help us refine and redesign our 4.5×5m Danish living room

last month

Hi all – my partner and I are about to move in together, combining two lives into one space. Therefore, we want our living room to reflect our personalities while making it feel more cohesive, stylish, and functional.

We’ve attached current photos + HomeByMe render (not final!) to visualise some early ideas – but we’re open to any and all feedback: layout, colours, lighting, zoning, storage, styling... anything that helps!

Room info:

  • Size: 4.5 × 5.0 meters (≈ 15' × 16' 5"), ceiling height ≈ 2.7 m
  • Location: Denmark
  • Style preference: Scandinavian with mid-century touches
  • Budget: flexible (mainly looking for smart ideas, not price tags)

Constrained elements:

  • TV and speaker placement must stay where they are (due to acoustics, cabling, and outlets)
  • Flooring (light laminate) can’t be changed
  • Whiteboard, mannequin lamp (and sofa) must stay, but can be moved
  • Workstation / PC setup must stay by the window (light + electrical setup + screen glare)

Flexible elements:

  • Speaker color/fabric/model can be changed
  • Wall paint, curtains, rug, art, dining chairs, shelves, lighting fixtures, sideboards etc. are all up for reconsideration

Goals – what we’d love help with:

  1. Cohesive visual style – currently a bit jumbled (clashing wood tones, open shelves, competing focal points)
  2. Defined zones – work, dining, relaxing – with less clutter
  3. Improved lighting – the space gets dark, especially in Danish winters
  4. Smart storage – to hide cables, gadgets, and daily items while keeping personality
  5. Refined layout & decor – how do we make this feel more like our space?

Any suggestions, layout ideas, sketches, color palettes, moodboards, or critiques are very welcome. Thanks so much for reading – and for any creative input you’re willing to share!
