Taj Mahal Slab backsplash help with window and hood wall /no cabinets

last month
last modified: last month

Our designer likes the bottom rendition. I like the top-as I prefer a straight line not a cutout. For reference:The hood will go to 11 ft. ceiling and the window is 84 widthx48 ht. Window is new as the room is a cave now! And will have 3 sconces above it.

I prefer version 3-with or without shelf. Shelf would be at cabinet height (ai could not make it right!)

Hi! Have you considered taking the tile to the ceiling?

May I say I don't like either rendition? Why a shelf under the vented hood/over the stove? Wouldn't the shelf interfere with the venting? Wouldn't the shelf be a cleaning nightmare? What would you put on the shelf, anyway?

I'd backsplash the entire wall with the Taj Mahal.

Or, do a 3/4" run of Taj along the cabinets and a full piece of the Taj under/over/ and around the hood.

What will shelf be made of? often you see a lower backsplash area with a stone shelf

I prefer the second one but not sure it's the right answer yet.

Maybe this with a shelf going all along the top of backsplash vs just under the hood.

Or you could do a 4" or 6" backsplash with a taller section under the hood.

How are you wrapping it around the window?

Are you going to have enough room for your faucet? I have 3 cm Taj Mahal and ran it under the window sill ... but I also had that lower cabinet run pulled out 3" to give my faucet plenty of room.

@shispa- we have not put in the counter yet.. but I will make sure I have enough room for the drop in sink and faucet. there is about 6 inches to the window sill. @Lyn Nielson -the shelf will be taj mahal. e@elcieg -I do not like the idea of a whole wall of Taj Mahal. It makes the look very heavy and we are coasta and want it to be light and bright, and the shelf will be at cabinet height so about a foot lower. And it mostly for appearance just to break up the wall a bit. We have an induction stove going in so really I do not need anything too powerful, and I rarely use the stove top anymore preferring barbecuing, the oven and the air fryer. (air fryer is in the oven). @stiley-yes that is very much like my inspiration pic.. except I would like to bring the taj-above the taj shelf to the bottom of the hood and across on both sides.

I think a full Taj Mahal backsplash is gorgeous. The shelf idea can get visually messy and the items will get greasy. I think these are beautiful.

I'd like to know what's the view through the window. If you have a good view, I'd change the window to a single fixed with picture frame surround. No sill. Possibly change the size.

I was going to post something like what elcieg did -- an updated riser, not the old 4" but 7 or 8. then full height behind the range only. Understated and pretty.

I'm not loving the full shelf idea due to my personal allergy to dusting all the time, but I get the appeal of the look.

Someone gave me this example... This is what the designer had suggested. or I may run the ledge all the way across and just do the same shape ie. the quartz going up to the bottom of the hood when under the hood.

Here is a progress pic. Our ceiling is two level-10 foot and almost 13 foot high. Cabinet on the right (where ladder is ) will go to the ceiling. So we cannot put the slab up to the ceiling without it looking awkward with a two level ceiling and a large window. so I think it best to leave the slab going across between cabinet and window at bottom of hood height. What do you think?.

Have you considered a better layout where the range isn’t crammed into a corner with not enough prep space?

  • last month

@Lyn Nielson We have about 20 inches on one side and about 40 inches on the other side of the range to the sink. We also have a 90 inch island. We have more than enough prep space.

  • last month

^ thats great. I didn't ask how much prep space you have.

What did you decide to do with the shelf?

  • last month

@Lyn Nielson-I just cannot decide! Right now it looks like this. Where the ladder is will be a cornered cabinet to the ceiling. (we are reusing all the IKEA cabinets we bought with the house and doubling the amount of them). I can't decide. Many people say pull the slab to the ceiling but it would look very awkward with the two height ceiling.

I couldn't find an example with a cabinet at one end... I would do ONE narrow shelf with only the slab to the bottom of the shelf. But, just above the bottom of the cabinet, NOT in line with the bottom of the cabinet. What do you plant to put on the shelf above the stove top?

  • last month

@Lyn Nielson...Lol, I have no idea. I just thought they looked cool. We do not need to store anything on them as I have pull-outs galore for everything. I may just not put the shelf in as there is only 18 inches on either side of the hood. I will simply put the slab up to the bottom of the hood. I believe that putting the slab at under cabinet height (18) instead of 30 -hood height with an 11 foot ceiling will make them look like I could not afford the rest of the way to the hood height. The proportions may look very off. And I do not like the key hole look where the slab comes to the hood height and goes down on either side to under cabinet height. That looks good if there are cabinets on either side of the hood-but this will be open.

This article just popped up in my email and it reminded me of your project: https://www.housebeautiful.com/design-inspiration/a65027411/half-backsplash-design-trend/
