Help with Furniture Arrangement and Decorating Resort Coastal home

I could use some help with furniture arrangement and decorating ideas for our great room. The overall style I’m going for is coastal resort—
comfortable, light, and relaxed but still pulled together.

The paint color will stay (it’s Sherwin Williams’ Agreeable Gray), and the current rug is going to be replaced with something more neutral—I’m thinking a small-scale print wool rug in soft tones.

Right now, I have two blue striped chairs in one area, and I’ve considered swapping them out for a loveseat. I think it might look a little more streamlined, but I’m unsure about how that would work for usage and flow. I’d love your thoughts on that—whether a loveseat makes sense or if the chairs are better for flexibility and maintaining an open feel. The two beige chairs are swivel chairs.

Any input on furniture placement, layout ideas, or decor touches that would enhance the coastal resort vibe would be really appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

The layout looks good, and guests tend to prefer their own chair over sharing a loveseat. We think it might be best to keep the chairs and the rug. It adds color and interest to the space. Otherwise you might consider doing a sofa table behind the sofa if you need more storage, but otherwise it looks great. The image below is a layout we did for a client which shows two sofas and two chairs. You could try that if you really wanted, but a loveseat might be too small.

Thanks so much, Annette. I have a few questions as I continue pulling the space together.

A sofa table is planned for behind the sofa, but I haven’t found one that I love just yet. Still on the hunt!

As for the rug currently in the great room – it’s a really nice wool piece from Company C. I originally considered moving it to the upstairs loft, where it would work well with the sectional up there. Now I’m wondering if it might be better to go with a simpler pattern in the great room and then use that same simpler carpet as a runner on the stairs for visual continuity.

Would love your thoughts –
• Would it make sense to do a wool runner on the stairs and then repeat that same pattern as a runner behind the sofa and possibly a 5x7 after rug at the front entry as well?
• Or is there a more cohesive way to mix these pieces while keeping the spaces visually connected?
