What size glass topper should I get for my ogee edge wood dining table

last month

Our wooden dining table was made to look rustic and worn, but really it has just been a pain! You cannot do any work at the table, like writing of any sort, because the surface isn’t smooth, and the wood is pine, so it is scratched and marred very easily. There are lots of gaps and crevices in the wood for crumbs and other materials to find their way into (think playdoh & kinetic sand!!!) and it is SO hard to clean!

Several years ago we rented an Airbnb that had our exact dining table—with a custom tempered glass topper on it to protect it, and it looked GREAT! I’ve thought about it often over the years, and looked into getting one custom cut for ours, but never pulled the trigger and bought one. Until now. It is time. I’m over it!

My delimma is that the table has a sort of ogee edging/trim, and I’m not sure if I should just get the glass cut to sit on the flat portion of the table, or if I should get it to cover the entire piece, edge included. I feel like it would likely look better if it’s just sitting on the flat portion, but that leaves the edge uncovered and therefore, unprotected, so they may get damaged. But if I have it cut to the dimensions of the whole table, including the edge, the glass topper may overhang over the edging, but it will leave a gap under it, where the wood doesn’t touch, and I worry that it will make the glass more susceptible to breaking on the edges.

What would you do?!

My table dimensions are 78” x 42” including the ogee edge. Measurements of the flat surface of the table top are approx. 76.5” x 40.5”.
