I asked a question about one of the three oaks about 3 years ago and it spurred much discussion about what type of oak it actually is. One of the posters did say he believed my tree is "mostly Bur Oak." I guess that means it will be on the bigger side of between the two.

The parent tree was 20 years old and maybe 30' tall. It's gone now. I dug up and potted the seedlings in 2016 and planted them in the ground in 2018 when they were less than a foot tall. My biggest Bur Gambel is now aprx 20' tall. It's growing fast.

Thinking about the original Bur Gambels, since they were roughly 30' at 15 yrs I'm feeling more comfortable about transplanting the really little one (just 2') to a spot in my yard that will give it the freedom to thrive. I think. It will be close to an unhappy London planetree, Platanus × hispanica. The plan is for the Bur Oak to eventually replace the London planetree. My logic is the oak has deep roots and the London plane roots tend to spread out at the surface so hopefully root competition won't be a problem while they're temporarily close neighbors. The London plane was recently heavily pruned so it won't be blocking much sunlight at all to anything below it (poor hostas need to have some new shade figured out).
