No. California/Oregon road trip

DH and I have a big road trip planned for early Sept — well, he has it planned and I am coming along. To be real, his main goal is to take photos of the coast. I had one request, which was to stay at a place I had read about somewhere (Mar Vista Farm). We will stay there for 2 nights. All other stops will be 1 or 2 nights.

Following are our stops. Would love any ”must see” recs, including restaurants (casual — we won’t be packing fancy clothes). My main contribution to the itinerary will be researching restaurants for dinners. We will be traveling the first two weeks of Sept.

DH planned it so our drives between destinations are no longer than 2 hours or so, which will allow for plenty of stopping for whatever we see along the way, as well as having enough time to explore when we get to each town.

Fly into SFO and drive to Jenner. (1 night)

To Anchor Bay/Gualala (2 nights at Mar Vista).

To Mendocino (2 nights at Brewery Gulch Inn).

To Garberville (2 nights at Benbow Inn).

To Eureka (1 night)

To Brookings (2 nights at Tanbark Shores).

To Bandon (1 night)

To Florence (1 night).

To Eugene (1 night, then fly home).

I assume we should bring layers and be prepared for any kind of weather.

Sue, you're passing through my neck of the woods (Jenner). Early September can be hot, but on the coast, especially up through Northern California and Oregon it can be chilly. Bring layers. It's not SoCal.

My late DH and I used to take our kayaks to Jenner and paddle around among harbor seals on the river side. I don't know that there's a lot to do/see in Jenner, but if you head up the Russian River (which meets the Pacific at Jenner) you might enjoy Duncan's Mills.

These are not ”must sees”but places I have visited and enjoyed.

From Jenner, east to Occidental: Restaurants:Union Hotel and Negri’s.

Fort Bragg: Davids, great breakfast place. Local Photographer has pictures for sale on the walls.

Fort Bragg, there is no glass left on glass beach. lots of ground squirrels.

Fort Bragg: Restaurant: Mayans: Friday and Saturday nights: Prime Rib dinner.

DH and I took a driving trip through that part of the country a few years ago and loved it. There are so many lovely places to pull over. Haceta Head Lighthouse was a favorite. And of course, stop to see redwoods if you haven't been already. We also enjoyed getting oysters at every stop. West coast oysters (at least the varieties we had) are much more tender than what were were used to on the East coast.

We had a nice time at Homboldt Bay provisions restaurant in Eureka (casual place with super fresh oysters).

Yes, redwoods! On the itinerary.

DH loves oysters. Ick, not me.

We enjoyed hiking the Fern Canyon Trail, and Pygmy Forest in Van Damme State Park, Mendocino.
