Height of curtains on tall screened porch - hide view

Starting my screened porch project and the non-patio side of the porch faces the garage. I am thinking about hanging curtains along that side to hide the view of the garage. The other two sides have views of the pasture and the garden. I don’t know exactly how high off the floor the roof starts, but higher than normal rooms. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Can I do curtains that don’t go all the way up to the roof line or will that just look stupid??

This is the view of the garage that I would like to hide. It’s a big garage and you would see lots of it.

This sofa will back to the garage view, with a rocker on each side; rug and coffee table.

No room for trees, the driveway and garage are there.

Paint the garage door the color of the garage to hide it somewhat. Then consider curtains or matchstick blinds.

Alternatively, you could also paint a mural on the garage to make it a feature of your landscape.

curtains blow in the breeze and gather dirt and dust.

Paint the garage dark, like the roof color, including the garage door so it all disappears into the landscape.

If you do install curtains, go to the beam right under the roofline, and I would stack them on the side that conceals the garage the most so you could open them to still conceal. Ideally that would be against the house as well, I can't tell.

Use Sunbrella or Perennials drapery fabric (outdoor), and plan on doing regular maintenance. These are hang to dry so you may be able to just hose them down. They make lead weights or can use chain in the hems to weight the bottoms so they don't blow as much. Well made curtains of this size will not be a budget item.

Work on the looks of your garage so that it's nice to look at. Paint the door the same colour as the siding, install sconces, plant a tree, place containers with shrubs and /or flowers.

I had custom curtains made for my FL lanai/pool screen enclosure. They are made with Sunbrella fabric and they add clips to the hem and to the floor, so there is no "blowing in the breeze". As far as dirt and dust, they are Sunbrella and can be hosed/washed. They are also fade resistant.

I had to install these on one side because our landscaping was young/small and our neighbor has a camera pointing towards our house. Hedge is growing in nicely after 3 years, but I still like the extra privacy if we have family using the pool.

This is the distributor we used. They cover most of mid/south FL, but you can call and ask if the manufacturer has distributors in other areas.

Forgot to say that mine are around 13 ft tall.

I’m sure the curtains will collect the same amount of dust as the furniture! We are not afraid of a little dirt - it’s a farm. There is no room for a tree, there is a huge river birch just out of view.

Assuming you want to open and close these curtains without a ladder, a drapery wand might help. You often see these in hotel rooms in a clear/white plastic and they come in different lengths.

I don't understand from your pics how you see this garage? Is it the neighbors garage? If a line of tall thin arborvitae won't fit I might look into a privacy fence/ barrier.

I know your drawing is a rough depiction, but I would do a door that matched the openness of the wall areas.

    or even

I can easily close my 13 ft tall outdoor curtains without a ladder! They are on a rail and slide very easily. A child could open/close them. No wand needed.

Why don't you show the view from inside the porch to the garage side, the side that you want to hide?

Nice renenderings of your project, I bet it will look great once the porch is built. You are getting some good suggestions. Making the garage look nicer and blend better helps. I think your curtian should go all the way up- partway up will look incomplete or a hack. Pay mind to your curtian rod and carriers- some make it easy to slide your curtian, some are not as great. If you want a more floaty action, use weights in the bottoms of your curtian- if you want it to be more solid, use clips along your verticals to keep the curtian in place. Palimpsests suggestions of door styles are more open, I think they work better than the ones in the original rendering.

I would get a really good track, number one. Something with minimal splices, probably custom. Or really you could do a traverse rod with a pulley. This would definitely be a custom installation too, because of the length.

I personally don't like to touch curtains or drapes to open and close them, because I don't want to wrinkle or crumple or dirty the leading edge, which is why I think a wand is a good idea. You would want them to be easily moved by hand, but something that would keep your hands off the fabric is good too. Plus a rod pulls by the hardware and at the top, not by the fabric and in the middle. Better physics and less stress on the fabric itself.

Good point about the wand palimpsest. Physics is our friend :)

The project just started. Footers get inspected Monday. I doubt I will ever slide the curtains open or closed, I would not want to look at my big garage or the driveway. But I will keep the wand in mind, I do find wands handy when in hotels that have them. We did go with open door style for the porch, mainly because we could not find doors that would match the barn doors. I would like to do barn door style garage doors, but it’s probably not in the budget anytime soon, since I would need 3 of them.
