Help Deciding Trim Color for Brick House

last month

Any suggestions re: trim color. As you can see trim around large window and door (not in photo bc construction). Siding, dormers and garage doors are beige. Looking to replace the yellowish color and I’m overwhelmed. The house is mostly north and a little bit west facing. Thank you so much!

^Love those BM gray/greens from Lyn.

This is a darker green used on a family member’s home. Might be another option for your door and shutters.

    Wow, gorgeous home!

I love sage green with red brick, as Lyn posted. But question--are the keystones above the windows concrete/stone? they won't be painted if they are, correct? Also the window muntins will stay light? or are you planning on painting them too?

Here's a link to an article with a brick house like yours and several different colors of trim:

All I see is black shutters when I view your home. I'd consider removing all of them and painting the windows black instead.

It appears the previous owners chose the lightest fleck in the brick for their trim. I think it is the perfect color. It is more in vogue to go dark. As you see on some of the above renderings that can work too. I love sage green and sure it goes with your brick but it's out of left field. A new element. All are equally striking. Which speaks to you? It comes down to personal preference. I agree I don't think the shutters are adding to your home. They are too much. Maybe if they were lighter??? I'm not sure. As a rule I think shutters always look best when they match the window trim.

I don't understand all the hate for shutters on this site. Shutters are perfectly appropriate for this beautiful brick colonial home. And just because you have white framed windows doesn't mean you need to match the shutters.

Personally for me, black shutters (I think they are entirely appropriate on this style home and sized correctly), and BRITE WHITE trim. White windows and white trim will make the house pop.

I too dislike a clutter of shutters I think they do nothing for this house but IMO that white thing at the front does not belong on that house so I guess the trim will need to match that . I will agree black windows would be ahuge step up no shutters and then that white part maybe painted black

@Diana I usually agree with you, but these shutters are actually hitting each other, they are too close to each other. The house would look beautiful with no shutters.

A great color that works well with brick homes in terms of a light trim color is SW Oyster White.

I do think brick with black and white can be classic. I might consider painting the dormers white.

Shutters on Georgians are appropriate when you can still see the brick between the shutters. Maybe if the shutters were undersized there would be better balance on the house.

Here's your home with shutters that are slimmed down.

Function needs to come before fashion!! Shutters that obviously don't do their intended job are silly. Where do you live? Are the shutters even needed in your area of the world?

Current trim is perfect. Sorry you don’t like it. Maybe a cream with a tad more white and slightly less yellow.

Ignore all of the shutter talk. They are the perect size for the situation at hand. Yes, they would look different on an older home that had not crammed as many small windows into the width of your home, but you are working with what you have.

And if the shutters were narrower, I'm sure there would be comments about how they are too narrow and wouldn't cover the windows if they were to be closed. You just can't win.

This house is far and away one of the nicest I've seen in the design dilemmas. I'd take it in a heartbeat over some of the awful so-called MCM houses, the builder "colonials," the McMansions, the high ranches, the splanches, and the ugly ranches so many post here. Not to mention the no-style mishmashes.

Are you considering a portico over the entrance to balance out the trim above it?

All of that lovely trim floating over the flat front door is weird and I can only hope that the equipment at the entrance is there to replace whatever was removed

No one has mentioned the gray siding of the dormers which would be a perfect color for the large arched bumpout front and center. I wonder if the door pediment with the house numbers could be painted a different color.

I think shutters depends on the house and not necessarily in regard to architectural purist ideals. For this house, Beverly's rendering is beautiful without them. I borrowed it for my concept sketch.

The gray/taupe is supposed to be the same as the dormers with white trim. Brass numerals:

Thanks everyone! The trim was taken off sides of door and will be replaced. Here is a better picture.
