It is a Hypericum but I don't know which ones you might see in you region.

It looks similar to Hypericum perforatum? It has a wonderful butter-yellow color.

My guess was just a stab in the dark. I saw a patch of perforatum once and it reminded me of this plant. There are 35 species in zone 8. Some species can only be ID'd by examining the reproductive structures.

It's very common here so I've seen it many times. This one just doesn't look quite right.

The next time I run into H. perforatum I plan on examining it more closely. I got 2 plants from a nursery that were supposed to be Hypericum kalmianum. Other botanists told me it wasn't kalmianum. It was one of 2 species, and the seed capsules would prove which species. I never got around to checking. I have since grown some Hypericum kalmianum from seed and I also grow H. prolificum.
